Would This Team Have Done Better 2020-21

Created by: Agent_Of_R9
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 20, 2021
Published: Oct. 12, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Looking back, I have to feel that the Leafs front office caved into the old school mentality that emphasized size, physicality and leadership. They recruited a lot of players who fit this idea such as Thornton, Simmonds, Foligno and Bogosian who simply never panned out due to their age and injury problems. You have to wonder how differently things may have been if they went after effective play drivers who are in their prime instead.

You can't just throw a bunch of good players on a team and expect them to win. With this much roster turnover your team now has the chemistry of an expansion team.

In this scenario does Tavares stay healthy or no? Not making excuses for last year's failure (they still should have won) but just having him in the lineup probably changes the outcome

Yeah for sure the chemistry of the team is never guaranteed, but I have to feel going for young players who are still effective would've been better than adding old guys like Thornton, Foligno and Simmonds who are washed up or injured.

Yeah for sure I think having the captain available and healthy would've boosted the confidence of this team. Considering the horrific scene of the injury, they still fought back hard, but unfortunately couldn't overcome their weak mentality overall.

The older guys are smart and looking to win that elusive cup so they realize and accept they aren't going to get the minutes that the star players get. The players you've added would they still be as effective with less minutes in a different situation? I don't know but it's been 53 seasons since Toronto has won a cup so they are under a lot of pressure and have been for a while. When the Wings won their cup in 1996-97 it had been 41 seasons and leading up to that everybody was second guessing everything. Mike Vernon won the Conn Smyth Trophy and was considered the missing piece for the Wings even though it was his 3rd season with the Wings.

Oh. We're being serious? I was not aware. Thank you.

Should the Leafs have cut bait on Andersen after two backups outplayed him, rather than letting the backups walk? Yes. That would have helped a lot.

Should they have added a spare middle six center with their newfound cap space, before Tavares got hurt? Yes. That would have helped the most.

Should they have used more of Andersen's cap space to sign three UFA defensemen and go all-in before developing Sandin or Liljegren? That could have helped, too. Especially if two of the veteran guys they picked up were giants with some skill. Good call.

Was Hall willing to play outside of his home town of Boston? I don't know, but I agree he made more of an obvious impact in last year's playoffs than Engvall and Mikheyev, or than Nick Foligno.

Would Chicago have traded Strome last summer? Doubt it, but again, he could have stepped up in Tavares' spot and given the team a morale boost, maybe? Not that Kerfoot wouldn't be better there, still.

Should the Leafs have known to sign Verhaeghe rather than Bogosian off of the Lightning? I mean, how do you choose? They probably called both.

Did Sheary do better last year than Boyd? I actually thought Boyd was having a career best start, offensively, and Toronto should have moved him up their lineup, rather than waiving him. Sheary also had a really good year.

But the part I really want to argue with, here, is playing Dermott over Chara. I am so confused about that part.
