Giving away an awful lot for a more expensive goalie who has been trending downwards and questionably better than kosk over the last three years.

"I SOMETIMES THINK IM THE BEST". I'd be rethinking. Without any big expiring contracts how to Oilers pay of Nurse and other RFAs next season. Gibson has a NTC. Other cost efficient goalies will be available at a lower cap and not costing so much to acquire.

Kassian is next to be traded but after the season. A lot of UFA’s I don’t see coming back anyways. There’s a chance Klefbom gets traded as well to clear cap room. $7M cleared to add on to the $3M for next season. So $10M in cap space for Puljujarvi and Yamamoto who I believe will end up having good seasons

????? What you wrote makes no sense. Kassian traded? His contract is of poor value and teams that might even trade for him, would surely be sending cap back to the Oilers. Sure some UFAs are leaving but since they don't make much above the 1.2m, (demotion money) they don't have any affect on the cap, since replacements have to be added. Klefbom doesn't even affect the cap this season since he is on LTIR.
That leaves the Oilers with with the projected 82.5m cap next season maybe 2m more than they have this year.

No thanks. Holloway is a great talent with almost ppg potential plus a good defensive side. Anaheim needs to retain 2.4m for me to even consider it. I think we should go after other players like Korpisalo, Fleury etc

I made a bad assumption with the long term outlook lol. But still. Either way there’s still gonna be $7m in cap room after getting rid of both of those guys. There’s still more potential to make more moves. It’s just a matter of who.

How is Gibson a top five goalie? He’s provided comparable results over the past 3 years and has been showing a steady decline.

People’s perception of Gibson doesn’t match the results he’s provided in recent years. Seems while the ducks became rather insignificant people just paused perception they had on Gibson and ignore everything. It’s been 3 years in a row his numbers have had a steady decline that is very concerning for a goalie making a significant amount and is signed long term. There’s more risk attached than he is anywhere near a top 5 list. I was guilty of having this perception as well until pointed out and looked deeper into Gibson. Yes I think he can rebound on a better team of course but I wouldn’t make that bet with the quality of assets in this trade.

Gibson is a cap dump, but Korpisalo is worse. By far. Yuck!

Gibson is a cap dump. He's no better than Koskinen but his contract is a LOT bigger... Edmonton would be stupid to trade those two straight up, let alone adding two good prospects and two good picks. This isn't 2017 anymore...

I also made a Gibson trade before

Anaheim Ducks
Lavoie, Raphael
Broberg, Philip
Koskinen, Mikko
2022 1st round pick (EDM)
2022 2nd round pick (EDM)

Edmonton Oilers

John Gibson

I think this gets it done

Calling Gibson a cap dump I would say is pretty inaccurate.

He is a very good goalie currently in his prime playing on the Anaheim Ducks. He is much better than what people think.

Look at his numbers, he's actually much worse than most people think. He's a below average goalie playing on a below average team. Being a below average goalie on an above average contract makes him a cap dump. Its that simple.

Bridges between Melnyk and Turris are completely burnt. No chance Turris plays for Ottawa again until Melnyk sells the team (Turris will be out of the NHL by then)

Numbers don't tell the whole story, particularly when you play on a rebuilding team. I have been trying to find a way to demonstrate that for years but I think the most efficient one is simply this :

Brian Elliott 2010-11 in OTT/COL : 0.893 SV%

Brian Elliott 2011-12 in STL : 0.940 SV%

Your "analysis" only shows that other goaltenders are capable of doing other things, not relevant at all. You are pre-supposing that Edmonton's defense is miles better than Anaheim's just because of their position in the standings, when this isn't the case at all. Edmonton is the better team because of better offense and better goaltending.

Here's a comp between Gibson and Koskinen:

Past 2 years shots against/60
Gibson: 31.08
Koskinen: 32.70

Past 2 years 5v5 shots against/60
Gibson: 31.07
Koskinen: 32.34

Past 2 years 5v5 HD shots against/60
Gibson: 8.78
Koskinen: 8.50

So Koskinen faced more shots overall, more 5v5 shots and nearly as many 5v5 HD shots. Koskinen wasn't benefitting from a better defense, that's for sure. With that out of the way, lets look at how they performed:

Past 2 years save percentage
Gibson: .904
Koskinen: .910

Past 2 years 5v5 save percentage
Gibson: .916
Koskinen: .915

Past 2 years 5v5 HD save percentage
Gibson: .814
Koskinen: .833

Gibson has worse results than Koskinen despite a slightly lighter workload.

I don't care about the Oilers, the Ducks or Gibson. I have absolutely "zero dog in this fight". I was simply commenting what I have quoted "Look at his numbers..."

So I am not supposing anything here, and have zero interest to participate in this debate. I just came to say that Turris to Ottawa wasn't a possibility, I didn't even read a single post in this thread except yours because it was the one just before I posted #17

SV% is almost like +/-, you can't really compare it from a team to another. That's why a guy like Tom Preissing can be +40 just before being out of the league, or an average goalie like Brian Elliott can go +0.43 in SV% in a year just from changing teams

I am a goalie and I can assure you that the number of shots doesn't matter. The quality, odd-men rushes and defensive breakdown, D-zone coverage is what matters

In the end, on ability alone, I don't think one single GM would take Koskinen over John Gibson. Never thought somebody would ever debate this to be honest. lol

I posted the HD shot numbers too - and their HDSV%: Gibson is below average. Do you want to see Gibson's GSAx? One of the worst in the league. Quality starts? Well below average.

I get that he plays behind a below average defense, but he just isn't a good goalie anymore. There's NO LOGICAL WAY to look at his play over the past 2 years and conclude that he's still elite and worth his contract. None.

Gibson is only 28 y/o, he still has time on his side to add some quality seasons on his resume. Will it be with Anaheim is a question. Will they keep being a bad team for longer is another question

Nobody said he Is still "elite", even though I didn't read the thread I am assuming nobody did (quick ctrl+F search)

I didn't even look at the OP proposal until now and yeah no chance Holloway is included in that deal. The 1st round pick too. Koskinen, a 2nd and a decent prospect could be good for the Oilers though, if possible.

Yeah, you answered your own question here - the trade proposal pre-supposes an ELITE return, whether the word is used or not.

Which is why my intention was only to say what I did in post #17

I had no idea bout the proposal until now, and also goalies don't hold that kind of value, due to supply and demand. Very limited number of jobs available

so I actually made a trade between the Pens and Ducks where some people actually got mad that I didn’t add enough in the deal on Pittsburgh’s side. So it’s quite the topic around Gibson.
