The Sabres have 8 D men that are highly touted prospects or already NHLers under the age of 24. You think one of them couldnt flip sides to win an NHL spot or in Dahlin's case, go back to the right side. if they were concerned with RD depth they would have drafted one 3 months ago. That argument is stupid. They dont need to trade for a dman just because he holds the stick in his opposite hand

No sir, the argument that is stupid is that you think a 21 year old prospect has negative value. This is not about what Buffalo wants, this is about what San Jose is trading away to still finish bottom of the league.

The Sabres trade away their franchise center, for a dman, that gets beat out by at least 4 of the Sabres prospects, then if the Sabres decide they dont want a d group with the average age of 22, he gets beat out by any UFA, then he sits in their system for a couple of years, never gets a shot in the nhl and is at best thrown away for a 3rd. Thats some negative value

Dahlin Power Samuelsson and Jokiharju beat him out
so in your best case scenario, theyre trading for a 3rd pair dman.

You really dont get this...

This is not about Buffalo, this is about how San Jose is mortgaging their future to capstrap thems3lv3s and still finish bottom 10 in the league

Was this not just your argument 30 minutes ago?:

Just because you specifically dont want defense doesnt make them worthless

This is the point im arguing. The Sabres have no place for them, so for Buffalo, it does not add value to the trade. But since you asked: The worst thing in this trade for San Jose is the unprotected 1st, Eichel is a large upgrade over Bordeleau, Bryson is an NHLer now and has as much potential as Merkley if not more and better stats in his professional career and was drafted only a year prior to Merkley. So the cost to significantly upgrade both prospects into young NHLers is Hertl and an unprotected first
