Nurse is gonna be worth that very soon

Its possible, but most dmen have hit their prime by about 24-25. He's 26.5 I'm not sure I would expect further improvement vs continuing at the same level through his prime.

I think this is a great deal for Nashville, Ekholm is a great defensive dman with some offense, and this deal still makes him tradeable if they decide to retool further. He wouldve gotten longer term and possibly even more money as a UFA.

It’s a good contract, but this isn’t the type of move Nashville should be making right now.

Yeah its odd if Nashville is supposed to be rebuilding, but on the other hand: no NMC what so ever.
That is highly flippable to a contender, with keeping part of the salaryyou could make out like a bandit.
And basically none of those wretched 37-38 age years to pay fore. I kinda like it.

How so? Muzzin is a notch below Ekholm. The slight difference in their cap hits is offset by Ekholm being a bit more than slightly better.

I feel like this contract is signed to give Poile some more time in deciding to rebuild or remain competitive, if Ekholm weren't to be extended he'd have to chose by TDL.
Say they are reasonably competitive this year and makes the playoffs but becomes a bottom-feeder in subsequent seasons, Ekholm could still be a valuable piece if he were to be moved sometime in 2023 or 2024 and especially if Preds retain some of his cap.

I think this extension is a decent move from Polie.

I voted yes. Doesn't have him locked up in that 38 year range and a reasonable cap hit you can trade in the off season or next year if they decide to go full rebuild mode, As there is zero trade protection.

I would've traded him at last season's deadline, but at this point I can't argue with this decision. Solid deal.

Nurse should not be making more than Makar

With the defensive shortage, the AVA is what anyone should expect here.
He's a good player, and he got paid for it.
As far as the length, he's not a winger. Defensemen decline much slower. He's probably already had his greatest levels of decline statistically.
Defensemen don't play 200 feet games, hence their career's last longer. They play 150-160 feet. It's a huge difference.

The main reason to me I vote no, is because the preds should be in rebuild/retool and ehkolm was going to be a huge trade deadline bait that could get them a 1st and a decent prospect at least, the contract it self is a bit too high and won’t age well

Yep, same here. Not sure what Poile's vision is.

What makes you say that? I'd put them both at roughly the same level with Ekholm a smoother skater and Muzzin more.physical.

I don't feel Muzzin has the ability to carry his team on his back, the way Ekholm showcased last season, with the injuries to Josi, Ellis, et al. I understand no one other than die hard Preds fans would have been watching them back when they were banged up, bottom feeders, but he really showed he's got another level.

I have no idea what peoples issue here is. This offseason saw several worse players sign for several more millions of dollars and several more years of term.

This cap hit is not only very reasonable, but the term is shockingly team-friendly. I saw someone saying it doesn't align with their window. Well, letting go of Ekholm gives them very little - now they can ship him for a good return and potentially even retain a lot of dollars on a trade as the contract isn't that long.

Great deal for Nashville, I'm sure Ekholm could have found 6x6 at least, if not 6.5-7 for 6-7 years elsewhere.

It's a decent contract, I just don't understand why he would sign it or why Nashville would offer it considering their current plans. Seems like they are heading towards a retool/rebuild.

He's never done that though before as Josi is ahead of him right? I have faith Muzzin can do it of Rielly got injured. Muzzin has been awesome

He got the Petry contract as a Left shot equivalent of Petry. They are worth the same money and term. I don't understand why team direction means you can't keep an important player. If he is willing to be a transitional piece to the rebuild, so be it. Josi is there, so why can't Ekholm?
