1. To start the game, the Canes had TDA on the third pairing with Ian Cole.

https://twitter.com/Canes/status/1448784144947990532

2. TDA's EV TOI was 11:28 while Slavin's EV TOI was 17:08.

Not exactly the look of a 1st pairing or a match made in heaven even.

3. Skjei and Pesce are the only two defensemen on the Canes that got more than 20 minutes of EV TOI.

If Rod the Bod was looking for a 1st pairing to start the season for the Canes, this seems to be what he's settled on.

There's your 1st pairing.

4. Look, if TDA was a 3rd pairing defenseman this season and all he did was quarterback the powerplay, it could be a good redemption story.

At the same time, if he outshines both Bear and Pesce at both ends of the ice after a couple more games or so, I could see Rod the Bod promoting him to the first pairing.

That's also something I could get behind.

Especially if he stays out of trouble.

5. A spot on the first pairing is something that is earned based on merit, not entitlement.

Rod the Bod would attest to that.

Considering that he didn't just give TDA whatever TDA wants to start the season.

Best of luck on Saturday.

*Projected lineups*

ES TOI when more than 20% of the game was not played at that event

And something you're judging off his personality

I get you're a sens fan, but TDA was the best newboy on the team last night. EASILY. He's been the best defenseman through pre-season EASILY. He HAS EARNED top pairing minutes already! His on-ice play has already granted him that merit, and that's why he played 85.7% of his icetime with Jaccob Slavin!

Being a valuable piece for the power-play is beside the point.

The point I've been trying to make for days is that the Carolina Hurricanes should not put DeAngelo on the top pairing.

Rod the bod agrees with me on that front.

Hardly anybody on this site does as well, which is too bad frown

Really? I thought it was common knowledge that ADA was a 3rd pairing offensive specialist.

1. If projected lineups are never realized during an actual game, the team twitter account should stop posting them before every game..

Simple.

2. Most of the time, every hockey game are played 5 on 5.

If you ever watched one in your life, you would know.

3. I judge based on the facts.

The facts from last night lead me to believe that TDA was not yet ready to be a top pairing defenseman to start the season.

Something you've wanted for weeks but never happened.

4. It doesn't matter what other team is a part of my fandom.

It doesn't matter whether TDA is the "best newboy".

It doesn't matter what happened in the pre-season because the results from that have no bearing on a team's success in a given year anyway.

It doesn't matter whether you think TDA has earned top pairing minutes if Coach Rod doesn't think so.

It doesn't matter what % of his ice time he gets with Slavin.

5. What matters is whether Coach Rod gives TDA more EV TOI than any other RD.

If yes, then the evidence that TDA is the top-pairing defenseman for the Carolina Hurricanes becomes crystal clear.

That hasn't happened yet this season.

Until Coach Rod changes that for any game in the regular season or playoffs, TDA is not Carolina's top pairing defenseman.

Apparently, it's not.

If you look at the commentary from this post alone, you'll see that is not the case.

TDA also lead the team in xGF, xCF, and chances created (among defenders)... they won in SPITE of TDA being shackled.

That's not true if you're looking at 5v5 numbers. If you're looking at All Strengths, that's not a fair comp at all as ADA gets PP time but no PK time. In any case, certainly his 100% O-Zone starts at 5v5 contributed significantly to his numbers. But still:

Bear: 69.70 CF%, 56.03 xGF%, 70.00 SCF%
ADA: 64.00 CF%, 51.76 xGF%, 60.00 SCF%

Except.... TDA's partner most of the time the game was 5v5? Jaccob Slavin... 1st pairing

Not true at all - in fact ADA spent 0:00 with Slavin:

Cole: 11:04
Bear: 0:10

Carolina's top pairing, as of the end of last night's game, is Skjei and Pesce.

I don't see DeAngelo's name in the sentence above.

Do you?

ADA didn't touch the top-4 at all.

We can also see how sheltered he is by looking at how Rod played his RHD against the opposition's top scoring threat.

Pesce played 8:37 against Barzal
Bear played 5:51 against Barzal
ADA played 0.07 against Barzal

Ouch. That's SOOOO not 1st pair.

Rod knows exactly what he's doing.
