That's the one thing I've always given bowman credit for. Look at all of the key players over the past 6 years that Chicago has lost due to salary cap yet he's still able to retool and create a cup team each season. He's been able to retain the core guys and build a great supporting cast through draft, FA, and trades. Probably the best GM in the leauge IMO

If the NHL was a no cap league and have transfer money from the rich teams to support poor, we might just have a 16 team league also. Imagine the quality of play.

The salary cap was the best thing that happened in this leauge. Keeps it competitive and prevents teams from forming "super teams". Forces GMS to make smart decisions rather then spending a bunch of money. Look at NBA, MLB, and euro football leagues

I still feel like the salary cap should be raised, look at how many teams are right to the cap limit, raise it 10m and see how many teams use all that space

There's no question that the Blackhawks would have strung together Stanley Cup winning seasons, possibly even a 4-peat like the dominate NHL Cup Champion teams of yore, if not for the salary cap. I really enjoy the extra strategy of planning your team that the cap era has introduced though. It's akin to playing a fantasy sport as a part of being a fan of your own team. When it's done well, like Bowman has, it's magical to watch unfold.

That would separate the league even more. There are already budget teams that can't spend up to the cap right now simply because the market they play in doesn't provide the revenue to pay 74 million to the players. The teams that could spend 84 million on players would be far ahead of the teams that are on an internal budget less than that. The salary cap is a fantastic tool that keeps nearly every team competitive and few teams as powerhouses. The only teams that win for long stretches have great staff throughout their organizations (Owner, GM, Coaches, Scouts, Marketers) and lock up their superstars for years.

Go take a look at the NBA and tell me you want the NHL to be like that. I'LL PASS!
