He's 24 at the end of this year. If he signed an 8 year deal, it would take him to age 32.

Not that he couldn't get another lucrative Contract, but even if he is still playing well, he would probably be limited to maybe a 4 or 5 year deal from that age.

If he signed a 6 year deal instead (still would probably be between $8.5 to $9M), it would take him to age 30. That is pretty much the boundary where he could still be considered for an 8 year deal on his 2nd Contract.

5 years with another 8 after that takes him to 37 and covers the contracts of Panarin, Trouba AND Kreider (not that they'll all be here by then) so that the sweet spot IMO

I can see the argument for 5 years and 8 years. Either way he's gonna make insane money in the league. I'm sure when most people make armchair GMs, their higher focus is on AAV than on terms. Yes, terms obviously can impact AAV somewhat. Ultimately his next deal should be between 8-10mil, 5-8years. NYR loves him, he loves NYR, so I can see him wanting to get the 8 out of the way and forgo the extra couple of million bucks. Even at the end of an 8 year deal, he can still sign for a huge money 5 year deal after it expires

I agree - a five year extension would likely posture him (and the team) best for his next contract. Note, Goodrow's contract will also be up by then.
