Sean Monahan 2022-23

Created by: Masonh618
Team: 2022-23 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 14, 2021
Published: Oct. 16, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think he's the most likely to be "that" center to come to New York. There's no way not to get a center upgrade from Ryan Strome without a trade at 50% retention, and Sean Monahan is the only plausible name I can find out there.

Keep going... in 24 you're 2m without Monahan, then say you sign him @6m, makes you -8m, which makes it impossible to shed, considering ntcs. Verdict; Monahan walks, still need to shed 3m, lost big elc BSchneider & 2 2nds

No chance Calgary retains. But if Buffalo considers that a suitable return for 50% retention on him then sure, as long as we get Eichel in the same deal

Arizona passes easy. Calgary probably isn't retaining 6+M, but if they did you would need to bump that package up a little somehow.

That's a big overpay for one year of Monahan. Don't know Arizona would do that trade for a AHL forward. Even at that the roster isn't really cap compliant with bonuses.

In this example there is $18.37M available in 2023-24 (cap increases another $1M). The biggest names expiring names here are Monahan, Chytil, Lafreniere, Miller, Jones, Barron, and Hayton. Monahan gets around $6.5, Miller and Lafreniere combined around $7.5M. My verdict would be Chytil is moved instead, and the remaining cap gets distributed to Jones, Barron, Hayton, etc to round out the roster.

There's absolutely no chance Calgary retains if they're going to be getting Jack Eichel, but if they were merely selling his last year (as opposed to Buffalo), I don't see why they wouldn't retain if they were moving on from him. That nets Calgary maximum return value.

Well I'll let you guys handle the debate on the package for Monahan (Calgary isn't retaining 6+M, this is a 2022-23 ACGM not a 2021-22 AGCM).
But as for Arizona, Barrett Hayton is an AHL forward right now too. This trade would make both players NHL forwards. There's no reason to think Hayton is definitely on the block like Kravtsov, but I don't see why this would be an "easy" decline.

Also, which roster are you referencing at the end of this reply? My ACGM does not go above the maximum salary cap cushion for player bonuses.

Your cap is about 82m for 22/23, so yes you are cap compliant. But the bonuses are about 5m. If you were pay half of the bonuses that's 2.5 that is like carried over to the following year, decreasing the cap available for 23/24.

I thought the bonus cushion is 7.5% of the salary cap though ($6.1875M)? Why would there be a need to carryover bonus money when the bonuses in my ACGM add up to $4.95M?

I thought "cushion" was the maximum amount cushion you have in bonuses. But the bonuses still have to be paid. Well that's my opinion but you could be right.

From puckpedia: "While performance bonuses count against the salary cap, teams are permitted to exceed the salary cap due to performance bonuses, to a maximum of 7.5% of the Salary Cap. If a team exceeds the Salary Cap due to performance bonuses, then any amount over the Salary Cap is considered a Bonus Carryover, and counts against the cap in the next season."

Thanks for looking that up. It appears my interpretation was correct. The Rangers would have to carry bonus over to 23/24. Sure it's possible but I'm wondering if the Ranges would want to do it. I still think it's an overpay for an meh Monahan.

No chance more than 500k of bonuses are actually paid out there. For instance look at this years bonuses, bet we pay 1M in bonuses this year

I thought it only meant you have to carryover if you exceeded the maximum 7.5% of the salary cap. As of today the Rangers have about $7.55M worth of bonuses, which exceeds the 7.5% cushion, so if the Rangers have to go over the cap to pay the extra $1.4M, that $1.4M carries into 2022-23. If you had to carryover for using any of that 7.5% like you're saying, then I don't see how teams would be able to potentially award more than the 7.5% of the salary cap. That's why I thought it was only if a team does that, then carryovers apply.

On top of all this, New York would only need to worry about such bonuses if 100% of them are met, which is always doubtful.

The cushion is simply being compliant to "start" the season. 7.5%= 6.1m over cap allowed, say you have 9.1m in bonuses, 9.1-6.1= 3m is needed in cap just to start! Then cushion disappears. Now it's all "end" of season, bonuses earned say 3.1m, then you need 3.1m in cap or carryover

1- That part I did not notice, so let me amend my earlier analysis to say, yeah, you might have a deal if Calgary actually wants Schneider. They already have two top 4 guys signed for at least a few years, so I'm not sure that would be their first ask from the Rangers, but it's certainly possible.

2- Arizona is very high on Hayton, who is certainly trending better than Kravtsov ATM. Besides, they have zero reason to trade dirt cheap young talent they like right now.

I presume Calgary was offering Monahan, Dube, Zary and 2022 first.
Monahan is then traded to the Rangers for Schneider, 2022 2nd and 2023 2nd round.
Make the 2023 2nd the Blues 2022 2nd, I could not refuse that offer, if I were the Sabres GM.
Three picks in the first two rounds this year, decent RHD and Center prospects plus Dube.
Close to 4 first round picks, Jack is out west and only Dube is added to the line up this year.
Yup, let's move on from the Jack saga.
