Next game isn't an issue for the Leafs. They'll be able to emergency recall Hutchinson up after using an ATO tonight.

Moreover I imagine Mrazek's NTC would be used in this situation. He signed in Toronto for a reason and I'm under the impression he doesn't have a great relationship with Holland.

For what it's worth, Skinner would be recalled before Konovalov. The organization is very high on Stuart and he's paid more in terms of dues than Ilya has.

No this is awful for Edmonton. Smith is on a value contract with the way he's currently playing, and Mrazek is injury prone. Why help the Leafs?

In my mind, between adding a longshot 3C option (maybe? With great wings?) and gaining cap flexibility next year, Toronto wins this, but it's quite possible Mrazek wins the starting job in Toronto and even more possible that Turris is done being a factor in this league.

I think what Edmonton gets out of this is a pretty good starting goalie for the next three years. So to me it looked like a win-win. Thanks everyone for explaining why it doesn't work.

You watch the Oilers recently? Smith was top 5 in Vezina voting last year and currently has 1.92 GAA and a .953 Sv%. Big "boat anchor."

yeah, Mike Smith is a bad goalie and having good stats through 3 games is meaningless when combined with his entire career.
And Venzia voting, good one! I mean, if you're gonna use that hilariously bad excuse for a justification at least be accurate. He wasnt top 5, he was 7th. And you wanna know how many votes he got to get there? Two. Two third place votes. Utterly meaningless

I'm posting this as a Caps fan and genuinely trying to help both teams.

Smith has had really good save percentages in the playoffs, a few times. That's something Toronto often values. If they're happy with Mrazek, great. No problem. Just thought a skilled depth center and a cheaper backup goalie with less term might help them extend their starting goalie at a reasonable price, while Mrazek might waive for a clearcut starter's job, simplifying Toronto's cap picture and Edmonton's goaltending future.

You're very welcome.

Mike Smith was one of the main reasons they got swept by a significantly worse team last year and has imploded on the regular in the playoffs and Kyle Turris is just awful. This is a terrible deal for toronto because two bad players making too much money are not better value than a better one, even if that better one gets injured sometimes. The only thing this simplifies is getting Edmonton a much better goalie and getting them out from under Turris' deal that they couldnt even dump for free.

You're very welcome

"Bad goalie" again did you see him last year? Outperformed Campbell and Anderson on Toronto, and Mrazek with Carolina. And if you're gonna use playoffs as something against him... you can't because the Leafs lost to Montreal tears of joy

yeah, Mike Smith had worse numbers than Campbell and Andersen had a buggy hip, but sure thing! And yes, im using the playoffs against him, he won zero games. His team got swept by a team that was much worse than Montreal, so I can 100% use that against him.

I agree Campbell should start for the Leafs. That's why I made this post.

Except this gives them a worse backup and a crappy forward that wouldn't even crack their roster. Its a bad trade for the leafs

Yep. Those are your options. And when you say it like that, nobody gets offended. But nobody gets cap space, either.

First off, the Jets were above the Habs in the standings. So "worse" is funny.

2nd,

Smith: .923 sv%, 2.31 GAA

Campbell: .921 sv%, 2.15 GAA

Smith had a better save percentage and I'll give it to you, the Leafs were a better team.

first off the Jets were significantly worse by every metric except wins because they had Hellebyuk instead of price and allen being mediocre all season.
Smith stinks and the fact that oilers fans suddenly think different is funny

Oilers fans, Leafs fans, why argue if the Jets or Habs are better? Can't we just enjoy that they're tied for dead last right now?
