Fresh start

Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 17, 2021
Published: Oct. 17, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I'm not in the trade Marner camp because of his playoff production, I'm in the trade Marner camp because you should realistically have 1-2 10+M players not three, his money needs to be redistributed around the lineup.

82.5 M cap is possible but not a guarantee.

Extensions are not allowed by the NHL as conditions on trading draft picks.

And if we are trading Connor Brown back to Toronto next year, it will be for a guaranteed late 1st at a minimum.

Matthew knies is the back up to that. It's essential a second from last draft and either a first or second from the next. I have no problem paying a first for brown but knies and a second is a pretty fair return

But like I said in the description that isn't my motive to move him. I agree wholeheartedly with the statement you just layed out but it simply comes down to salary distribution. If he signed for 8-9 mill I'm probably not having this stance

Oh I don't disagree. I just won't listen to silliness about why.

The ideal guy to trade is Tavares but realistically he's the captain with trade protection. So Nylander is on the most efficient contract and we aren't treating Matthews so it's marner.

That's exactly how I got too it, he's an outstanding player but because of the Tavares deal (and COVID cap) it almost certainly guaranteed Marner wouldn't see the end of his contract here

Ottawa has plenty of quality LW prospects in the pipeline (Greig, Jarventie, Sokolov, etc) and another one is not necessary.

The types of prospects we are most lacking of are centremen and right-shot RWs.

With that said, I expect that Ottawa will be a somewhat stronger team in 2022-2023 than what they were in recent years.

We have no intention of trading Connor Brown because we intend to compete at some point.

As such, the starting bid on Connor Brown next year for any team will be what the Leafs paid for Nick Foligno last April.

I hope this helps.

I mean I would say it's a fair assessment but he will be Ufa and I don't expect Melnyk to pony up the cash for him. You could definitely get that for him but not from the leafs they will just wait till he is Ufa and bring him back.

Guri would probably break out in a big way in Toronto. I’d rather flush our coach and give Guri a chance in a better suited system here than trade him for Marner at his cap hit. Nothing against the offer I think it’s fair. But then the Stars have a similar cap situation with Benn, Seguin, and Marner. Maybe if we could unload Segs somewhere and give him a fresh start. But like Guri I’d rather see Segs in a more offensive system in Dallas first
