I can't imagine any team will retain on a 5 year contract without a MAJOR return.

I think kadri or burky would have to go to make money work, we'd be playing a man down every game how you've got it set up here. especially once franky comes back

You just asked a team to eat 15 million over 5 years and gave them 2nd and a prospect. Sure why would they do that?

Do you mean retain 3M total? Or 3M per season? Because that sure as hell ain;t happening, and certainly not for that return.

I figure that return would be 3 firsts, just for the retention, and thats if you can get anybody to do it, and you cant.

laugh laugh No team is eating $15,000,000 for 5 years for a prospect and a 2nd round pick 3 years down the road. For any team eating $15,000,000 in dead money you'd need to surrender at least 3 1st round picks rather easily.

I think Arizona would do it for the right price it would probably cause at least a 1st or 2nd for 22 draft

I think you are off, by a lot. I assume a mid first would cost about 5 million. The avs first is very likely late, for the next few years. So even if you assume that the avs late firsts are worth 5 million each, which is pretty generous honestly, the coyotes are tying up cap space for the next 5 years, space they might actually wanna use should they ever be competitive. Plus, teams only get 3 retention spots, and this ties up one of those spots for each of the next 5 years. Plus its not a paper transaction, they have to pay the money they are retaining. There is no world where a late second is worth 15 million dollars and tying up a retention spot.

I think for Kaut and a 2nd the Coyotes would happily take Nazem Kadri, clearing $4.5M of cap from the Avalanche this year, and letting Colorado figure it out in the future.

Kadri was front-loaded and is only paid $2M this season, so you might get by with just Kaut and a 3rd, to clear that cap space.

Teams can only retain on three players at a time and Ari is at two right now. They're not giving out a long term one that cheaply without another top ten pick in the mix for it.

I wouldn't even know how to guess as there's no comparison.

The truth is, I only think you do it if a gm makes a mistake. Retaining for that long is just frankly dumb. A good rebuild takes about 2-3 years. This is 5. That's just too long.

The leafs are still retaining on Kessel and nobody talks about it. They should. That was really stupid. The story was there was going to be no retention and we were gonna get kunitz back. But then he refused the trade so we got Spaling with a lower cap hit and retained.

Now everyone complains Marner makes too much at 10.9, but if he made 9.65 nobody would complain. That 1.25 million is the same as the stupid retention we have on Kessel. Never retain long term

Agree 100%. Plus we have an owner who hasnt exactly been cheap, who has had his entire hockey ownership turn into a huge embarrasing failure, who is getting sick of paying people to not work for him, and who has had a fairly public disagreement between his team and their petulent franchise player. You think he wants to pay THAT guy to not play here?!
