Regardless of value, you are well over the cap with a 22 man roster. I know he is McDavid but this is a horrible trade for Toronto

For sure. Holland should be fired if he were to decline. But then again he still has a job so anythings possible.

No matter how u look at it any McDavid trade isn't ever going to be good enough. Unless there is a player at his level or within a close range. Like maybe McDavid for Mackinnon + Byram (both locked up 8 years(

Very few McDavid trades I've seen I would accept from the Oilers side but this is a no brainer. To have Marners/Matthews at a "top 6" price point instead of "superstar" price point would allow you to really build depth.

Top 9 would look pretty solid at a similar price point.

Are you trying to say that the MacKinnon and Byram are worth more than Matthews and Marner?

And your point is wrong that nothing will be enough for McDavid because of the fact that a hockey forward can only play about 22 maybe 23 minutes max. In basketball a single player can be that important if they play 40-42 minutes of 48 minute games.

But no matter how it's sliced in hockey, forwards are off the ice well over half the time.

This is obviously enough for McDavid. Matthews is one of the few players in the tier below McDavid (yes he's below, McDavid is by himself), so Matthews at half the cost of McDavid roughly is a good chunk of the value of McDavid.

Add in marner on a bargain deal (given the retention) and it's enough. The first frankly with this level of players is actually fairly low value all things considered.

I was more thinking realistic trade for both teams.

No, I was more thinking along the lines of a realistic trade for both teams not a trade that makes you now pay 23 million for McDavid...and give up 2 of the best young forwards is the league half retained (Toronto wouldn't do this...it's worse for their cap.

Edmonton may rather McDavid and the question of which you would prefer without contracts is an interesting one.

But with this retention the answer is simply Matthews marner.
