Fixing MBs biggest mistake - lots of reading

Created by: Subbanator7667
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 20, 2021
Published: Oct. 20, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is a reimaging of what MB should have done in the 2019 off season, or even the 2020 trade deadline or even the 2021 trade deadline. All moves are what I think would hypothetically
Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Danault, Phillip
Additional Details:
Phil never gets the chance to walk in free agency, instead he is traded for the same as Pageau was, a 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd. In this example I'm gonna use Colorado as Kadri was shown to be unreliable in the playoffs and this would give them elite center depth for the next couple playoff runs at a cheap cost. And this is just an example as I think Vegas and Minny would have also been interested.
LAK
2.
MTL
  1. Tatar, Tomas
Additional Details:
I don't think Tatar would have had the same value he did when Vegas traded for him but after 2019 he was coming off a 61 point season and still likely gets a good return, likely a 1st and prospect for the sake of this I'm just gonna say a first and second.
NJD
3.
MTL
  1. Barron, Justin
Additional Details:
Habs draft Barron 25th overall in 2020 with the Danault pick, not going to estimate who they take with later picks
4.
MTL
  1. Bourque, Mavrik
Additional Details:
In an attempt to add offense to their top 6 Dallas pounces on Tatar on the trade deadline. To make things easy I'm just gonna say the Habs draft the same prospect as Dallas picks at the 2020 draft. Once again not going to guess what other picks would be involved
5.
MTL
  1. Rossi, Marco
Additional Details:
Trading off Danault and Tatar the Habs lose to the Penguins and draft higher then 16th. Likely inside the top 10 so going to say they draft Rossi instead of Guhle in 2020.
6.
MTL
  1. Clarke, Brandt
Additional Details:
Once again without Danault and Tatar the Habs never have the Stanley Cup run, draft in the top 10 and end up with Clarke

Why do people like prospects more than wins? You guys made the Stanley Cup finals last year! Remember how much fun that was for Habs fans? If I was you, I wouldn't trade that feeling for the world. No, you didn't win, but what a ride that was.

Honestly, I think that's too far to look back...it's this offseason that mistakes were made (IMO). Bergevin has pretty much handcuffed himself into this group of forwards for the next 2 seasons, without much room to adjust. With the current roster, (Assuming the return of Price/Byron), there's not a lot of wiggle room to adjust this roster next year...

Ow I loved it every minute of last year's playoffs. It's more the fact that everyone could see that after 2019 both Danault weren't gonna be back and instead of keeping course with the reset MB rode it out and lost out on proper value and really just moved the full rebuild back two years.

Great playoff run, absolutely loved it but would have liked being an actual contender some time in the next five years more and the only way that was happening was to embrace losing from that 2018 season and who knows by now would have been looking actually competitive

Considering Danault out scores Pageau while being better defensively you're right he's not Pageau, he's better then Pageau
