Rebuilding the D-Core

Created by: ash
Team: 2021-22 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 20, 2021
Published: Oct. 20, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Rationale:

Nurse-Bouchard:
I think most Oilers fans agree this will be our top pairing sooner or later. Bouchard has looked good and seems like an excellent partner for Nurse. (22-25 min per night)

Keith-Brännström:
Veteran presence with a young, puck-moving d-man. Something like this probably never happens under Tippett, but FFS I want to stop seeing Ceci in our Top 4. (17-20 min per night)

Cole-Barrie:
Let Barrie play sheltered 5v5 time with a solid partner. It would be nice to find some stability on our third pair instead of swapping between Koekkoek, Russell, and Lagesson. (14-17 min per night, Barrie still runs PP1)
Trades

  1. Brännström, Erik
Additional Details:
Both decent prospects struggling to crack their teams rosters. A change of scenery could benefit both, lmk who you think adds.
2.
EDM
  1. Cole, Ian
Additional Details:
Likely not a trade CAR makes, but the idea is to bring in a defensively solid 3LD to play with Barrie.
CAR
  1. 2023 3rd round pick (EDM)
3.

ANA
  1. Ceci, Cody
Additional Details:
Fire him into the sun. Still can't believe we signed him as Larsson's replacement LOL.

No team is taking Ceci and Ottawa would ask for a way better prospect than that

Agreed re: Ceci. We would have to add assets to move the contract.

What do you think OTT would want? Brännström's value isn't super high right now given he isn't being played in a still relatively weak Sens line-up.

“Isn’t super high” yes his value is still high, he was on pace for 35pts last year and was the best QB on the PP even better than Chabot. He played really well in preseason but the coach doesn’t like him. He’s still worth an A- prospect

I feel like this is one of those scenarios where if I suggested trading an A- prospect (Bourgault or Holloway), Oilers fans would cry overpayment; but if I suggest anything less Sens fans would laugh me out of the room ¯\_(ヅ)_/¯

Teams just generally like their own prospects better. And in all fairness to Ceci, he has actually been decent through 3 games.... a hell of a lot better than Barrie.

Ceci has been fine - why the hate?

Also, if Brannstrom can't even make Ottawa's lineup, how on earth is he getting top-4 minutes in Edmonton?? Your aren't using logic here at all.

Nurse Bouchard
Keith Barrie
Koekkoek ceci

Just be patient with the group they will get better as they get more settled in and more games behind them half of them weren’t on the team last year. (Bouchard was but wasn’t playing a regular role so included him in that.)
Keith I want to see with a veteran partner it’s too much to ask for him to learn new system with a new team and play mentor for some kid. Far better off just pairing him with a veteran so he just needs to focus on his own game and providing everything he has left in the tank. Ceci the contract is ugly but whatever he’s been alright so far if he continues on the path he’s showing will be just fine.

Keith Ceci have 63% and 59% xGF 5v5. I'd leave this pairing for now and see if it keeps up. Nurse/Barrie are our worst pairing based on xGF but the eye test says Barrie is causing a lot of that. Bouchard has best xGF% on the team... don't want to throw the kid into the deep end too quick but would be nice to see him grab some of Barrie's ice time to see if he holds up under tougher competition.

He already has been - twice now Tippett ran Nurse-Bouchard in the last half of the game and he's done just fine: naturalstattrick.com/pairings

Keith-Ceci have truly been great in 18-20 mins of play these first few games. Might not always be that way, but I think they will be fine in that role most games this season. Nurse-Bouchard looks like it'll be a regular thing sooner than later, and a good top pairing. For me, the key is getting a good defensive D partner for Barrie on the left side (could be Samorukov sooner than later), or trying to trade Barrie later this season or next season for a more defensive Dman if Bouchard shows really good consistency on a pairing with Nurse.

Barrie will soon be a bit redundant with Bouch, but a guy coming off top points for D is still enticing to some GM for foolish "shiney prize" reasons, I'm sure. Enticing enough to get a decent 4-5 level shut down D in exchange from a team with a struggling powerplay.

I had been looking at that as well. Of all the pairings with 10mins TOI or more, the only pairing below water is Nurse Barrie.

would think the sens would want to recoup a 1st even if it means adding a bit more value. Ideally an actual t6 forward or potential t6 forwards prospect (centre or RW is ideal) would be the return. Mcleod is a good shout though i wouldn't be completely let down if they made this move, i think he has pretty good middle 6 upside and could be a good complement to the centres they already have (theyre pretty much the same age aswell), although id like to see some more success from him in the NHL before Id fully consider it. Oilers maybe add another piece to push it through but the swaps not the worst, and i question if the the sens would really get a true top 6 prospect back like they probably want at this point aswell

If Logan Brown wasn't Ottawa's type, Ryan McLeod certainly isn't going to be.

It has been demonstrated how to properly use Cody Ceci. If your coaching staff still doesn't understand, it's either because they haven't been paying attention or that they really don't have any other solution.

So DO NOT use him like Ottawa did from 2016-17 to 2018-19, but more like Pittsburgh did last season

Cole is in Carolina to help with the canes own version of Barrie in DeAngelo. Canes aren’t trading Cole away, and if they were to, he would still probably fetch more than just a 3rd.
