You’re definitely not getting any salary retention, and Buffalo is not adding any draft picks either.

I dont care so much about the retention if its like a million, but we would have to be able to flip girard for an A forward prospect- and i have pretty serious doubts that you can. Top 4 left d, even on a great contract, i dont think thats a piece that you can flip for the piece that makes this trade work. And of course, the sabres may have drawn a line in the sand with the retention, which, ya know, is fine, eichel is a 25 year old franchise center, its not like skinner, where you would have to retain just to get him down to a cap hit where he might hold some value. Plus the pegulas are sick of paying people to not work for them, cant imagine after how the last 6 months have gone that they wanna retain for 5 years on him.

I dont see how moving Girard helps the Avs. Hes is a solid Dman that is part of their core. Eichel is gone all season and will be on LTIR until late March at the earliest. They dont have to move significant cap inseason to make the cap work for him

I mean you'd have to move cap if you planned on playing next year. With Toews, Byram, and Barron stepping up we have plenty of D to fill out the ranks. Girard is a solid top 4 but if eichel comes back healthy thats easily a top 5 center, you can't compare the two. Eichel would be the new piece of the core

I am not comparing Eichel and Girard, that is not the point. Its taking a strength on the current team and making it weaker. Avs would love to add eichel, yes hes a top talent in this league. But if the avs are going to win a cup this year, they need Girard, they cant trade him and hope eichel comes back in time for the playoffs and is heathy to make an impact

he wont have played hockey over a year by the time he gets back, You trade futures for him, and if you want to move girard you do it in the summer when he is at a premium and you can target young elc level guys to fill in the voids while managing the cap

Moving Girard in an eichel deal this season hurts the avs, doesnt help

I have seen similar comments from Sabres fans a number of times now. #1, Girard has been just as good or better on the right over his career. #2, his contract is a steal. Any team should be thrilled to have him at that price. #3, you can trade LHD prospects.

I don't understand having even the slightest reluctance on Girard or wanting to flip him considering the above.

If you can’t move a 23yr old top pairing dman on a team friendly contract for the next 5 yrs for more than a good forward prospect your GM sucks. It amazes me how people are willing to diminish the value of really good players. Girard is significantly better and cheaper than Seth Jones locked up long term and you question his value?

its bc people saw a few games of the vegas series and think he is some sort of train wreck Dman. Yet even in that series Girard was one of the Avs better Dman. Its mind boggling how much of an echo chamber this site and hockey twitter can be. One person made a comment and instead of looking it up themselves they all just become parrots

Exactly wrong. Im commenting on the value of left d. Thanks. Or heres an idea, have your gm do the heavy lifting first.

but to your point about tell our GM to do the heavy lifting first...you have to realize the reality of the situation

Sabres are in 0 position of leverage in any eichel trade talks. they have a player who will never play for them again, is seriously hurt, has a full NMC and a larag SB looming next offseason. The sabres org and front office 100-% botched eichel in every way shape and form possible. When he is traded you will be majorly disappointed

this doesn't mean eichel has 0 value or a bad player, is juts how vulnerable of a position they put thesmvels in ..teams will wait and grind them down, they have the time, the sabres dont

1) right now Girard is better than both of them. 2) Girard can play both sides and imo he is better on the right 3) do you actually think there is such a thing as to many good defenseman on a team?

I have no idea how they got to trading Dahlin or Power from my comment. One isn't even a prospect. They also seemed to skip over Girard being as good or better on the right.

It probably doesn't matter in the end, as I doubt Sakic would be willing to move Girard at this time. Maybe in a couple years.

He's quite good. He happens to play the only position in our entire organization that we have quality depth and assets.

So he makes no sense as a center piece for us.

so newhook is meaningless in this trade as well? Buffalo is not going to get a top rated prospect like Newhook plus a young NHLer of Girards caliber signed long term in a a trade. To say one is a centre piece and ignoring the other is quite the wild trade assessment

@anus_mccleod For the Avs Eichel without retention just doesn’t work because w/out in 2 seasons they would be looking at 1/2 their cap space going to 4 players, you can’t have that and any sort of depth. Yeah they can make no retention work this year because Eichel would go on LTIR but then you are straight screwed cap wise and you’ve emptied out your picks.

Can we agree to this?
The trade without the retention and pick is going to be close to what the Sabres will receive for Jack.
RW, LHD, prospect and a first.
Can we also agree that the first will be very late if not the last of the first round, and that Compher does not have the value he had two year ago?
So while the trade does address the needs of the Sabres, the retention and draft pick is too much to ask.

They dont have to move significant cap inseason to make the cap work for him. The Sabres have certainly started the season on a high note, but I think they would still prefer picks and prospects over solid NHL players. So if Gerard was removed, and he is as good as all of the Colorado comments indicate, it would a significant addition.

I have seen similar comments from Sabres fans a number of times now... Sabres fans are myopic. I like all of our LHD prospects, but the key word is prospects, Gerard is a solid NHL LHD

There in lies the rub, Kevyn Adams could only get a 2nd for Taylor Hall. What do you think he could get for Gerard, a third?
