The Morgan problem

Created by: Onslaught77
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 23, 2021
Published: Oct. 23, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Claim Nick Seeler next time the devils put him on waivers and alternate him with Dermott. Adds some grit and tenacity. Just concentrating on changing up the defence and dealing with losing Reilly. Obviously there would be some back and forth negotiating for Oleksiak and that's assuming the Kraken can come to an agreement with Reilly to resign.

Massive overpay. They also have no good puck movers because you traded our two best ones

Really, a absolutely ridiculous scenario. Massive overpay for the Olesiak. How to does this make the Leafs better this season? Trading two Dmen for one? It's absolutely nuts to think the Leafs, who consider themselves contenders would allow Reilly to negotatiate with another team.
And why is Reilly a problem? Teams "lose' their UFAs every season, and sign other UFAs.

This is an awful trade. The leafs could have had Oleksiak in FA is they wanted too. Don't get me wrong, he's still a solid bottom four d-man, and I'd consider Oleksiak plus for Rielly ( a top pairing defenseman), but not a chance the leafs add Sandin (who has strong top 4 potential), let alone another second round pick. Switch the second coming to Toronto and remove Sandin and it's probably fair.

Brodie is very good at moving the puck, but I agree this is a bad move

First, you all think Dmen are worthless and Reilly is going to sign for nothing. A team is going to give him 8 million for like 7 years so he's gone make no mistake. Second Oleksiak is a really good defensive D and a great option for Brodie who is signed until 2025-26 for $4.6m. While I like Sandin the opinion that he's the greatest D the league has ever seen is as bad a take as the one where everyone thought Dermott was.

Because i'm not spending time on people who think that teams are going to give up a Star D for a good top line offensive D rental. You at least aren't a complete idiot. You get a Defensive D who is incredibly underrated on a good deal with term. Is it an overpay, Maybe. But you are going to have to overpay to get what you need. Also Seeler will go back on waivers and they can pick up a gritty good bottom pair guy who can add some sandpaper.

I personally wouldnt move Sandin right now, I like his potential to be a solid #1-3 guy. I 7nderstand the interest in Oleksiak but I think there are better targets out there

Also I would put Dermott in there but despite a good showing the last two games he's got a negative value ATM IMO. They would want the Leafs to pay to take him. As for Sandin having top pair potential, Maybe, but it's a huge long shot and anyone suggesting he replace Reilly is delusional. If Reilly walks the Leafs are going to need 8-9 million to replace him.

You see, the biggest problem here is that you have traded BOTH of Sandin and Rielly. If they trade Rielly, they have to keep Sandin around so they still have someone to man the point on the top PP.

The problem is you think Sandin has been good on the power play. We can do much better. There's nothing about this team that says the power play is better in any way.

Sandin is better than Muzzin or Brodie on the PP. Oleksiak is not a PP guy. The current team would be better on the PP than the one you've proposed.

The current team isn't good on the PP. Reilly needs to be traded and I would love to keep Sandin but he's not better than Muzzin or Brodie by any stretch of the imagination. He's not the superstar you think he is. He may be one day, doubtful but he may be. Today isn't that day. There is a few trades that could be made straight up for a shutdown that's top line capable or with a pick or prospect but they need to move Reilly and bring someone in. The list of players with a 3 year contract or more you could realistically trade for isn't long and you have to give to get.
The good thing is that with Brodie being left handed you could get a guy who is right handed or left handed and it would still work. Brodie can play either side.

I never said he was better than Brodie or Muzzin, or even that we would be in the future (I think he'll be about that calibre or player in his prime, a good second pairing defenseman/ok first pairing defenseman but that's not the point). I said he's better on the PP.

Also I agree the current pp isn't very good. But replacing Rielly and Sandin with Muzzin and Brodie will only make it worse.

Finally, I didn't even say I'd be opposed to a trade revolving around Rielly and Oleksiak (it won't happen because Oleksiak was recently signed, but I'd consider a deal like Olesiak plus for Rielly). What I said is trading both Rielly and Sandin for a shut down d is not a good idea.

It's much easier to replace a bottom pair guy than the top, that's why I said to claim a guy who will be coming off waivers that would be a good replacement. He's playing really well in a way that suits the Leafs needs.

So you think they can resign Rielly? That's wildly optimistic. They have to replace Rielly either way. Either they lose him for nothing or trade him. Those are the options.

I said nothing about resigning the guy. My main point is don't trade Sandin if you aren't resigning Rielly.

Yes, I do think they can resign Rielly because they just did lol. I guess this whole conversation in now irrelevant.

I have to admit, He definitely took a discount. You look at what defencemen have been getting and how thin the options will be this off season and Reilly would have been offered a much better deal for 7 years. Props to him. With the cap going up by about 1m and that meaning it should continue to go up after that teams would have felt a lot more able to offer bigger deals.
