Putting things into perspective and making changes without selling the farm

Created by: sensonfire
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 24, 2021
Published: Oct. 24, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
TOR
    1. This was the 2nd half of a "back-to-back" for the Leafs.

    2. The Leafs were coming off a tough loss to the San Jose Sharks.

    3. The Leafs then had to pack everything up, fly from Toronto to Pittsburgh and get settled at the arena/hotel in less than 24 hours.

    4. Everybody on the team had "plane legs" where they had to sit still in a crowded plane for a couple of hours, inhibiting their ability to keep up with the Penguins.

    5. All their energy was spent on that see-saw back-and-forth game against a red-hot Sharks team, leaving them with next to no energy or ability to push back against the Penguins the next day.

    6. The Leafs had absolutely no time to practice for the game against the Penguins.

    7. Scheduling can make a world of difference to a team's fortunes on a given night.

    8. Although they are professional athletes, they are also human beings.
    PIT
      1. The Penguins have been at home in Pittsburgh since the 15th or 16th of October.

      2. Since then, they've been able to get a comfy sleep in their own beds at home every night.

      3. The Penguins had at least 3 days to practice for last night's game against the Leafs, considering they haven't played since Tuesday.

      4. The most amount of travel they needed was about a 20 minute solo drive from their comfy, suburban homes to the arena downtown on game day.

      5. The Penguins are having a good season so far with points earned from each of their first few games so far, even without Crosby or Malkin.

      6. The degree to which the schedule favoured the Penguins over the Leafs last night is disgusting and grossly unfair.

      7. The Penguins had home-ice advantage, the last change and got the match-ups they wanted as a result (particularly against Kerfoot, Kampf and Kase).

      8. The Penguins feasted on one specific line (Kerfoot, Kampf, Kase, Muzzin, Holl) while everybody else was pulling their weight.
      2.
      TOR
So, what's the solution going forward?
        CAR
          1. Get a good night's sleep at a comfy hotel close to the arena in Raleigh and start off fresh the next day.

          2. Put the game against the Penguins behind you, given it's only Game #6 in an 82 game season.

          3. Recognize that there might be nights just like last night when the schedule is grossly unfair to the other team.

          4. Don't panic by selling the farm and trading everybody away when you have another game tomorrow.

          5. Just make a couple of line changes (like taking either Kerfoot Kampf or Kase off the third line) and you're all set.

          6. Most importantly, take a deep breath and put things into perspective.

          You're friend,

          Sensonfire

The Sharks were playing their 3rd game in 4 nights when they took it to the Leafs.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins took it to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

I’m not buying this is only game 6. We’re into year 6 of this core being in place, the Leafs have had way too many of these games that were supposed to be teaching moments. The Leafs haven’t learned a single thing from these games and we get the same result, more disappointment. It's not too soon to panic with this group. They could seriously miss the playoffs. There are no changes coming in season. This is the roster. There's no cap space. These are the coaches. They were just hired. It’s up to Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander to figure this out.

          Hm.

It's crazy that Bergevin and Armstrong can spend a decade signing terrible contracts and doing stuff like needlessly losing Vince freaking dunn for nothing

Meanwhile Dubas manages very tactfully all around

And because of random big PDO surges in the playoffs the first two get more credit than the actually good GM to a point where it's almost ridiculous

          Confused

Erm... you do know every team has to go through the sorts of travel/rest/practice issues the Leafs do, right? And many have it worse, due to their location. I mean, the Toronto to Pittsburgh flight takes a whole hour.

The Leafs went through all those issues over the last two days while the Penguins had a whole week without worrying about any of that nonsense.

          Advantage Pittsburgh.

Again, this happens to everyone at some point, and it happens to other teams more often. Besides, you're really going overboard with how much of a "horror" they had to endure, none of which excuses coughing up a four-point night to Marcus Petterson.

          But I digress.

The issue is not that the Leafs went through horror.

The issue is that over the last 48 hours or so, the Penguins went through paradise in comparison to the Leafs.

But like you said, it happens to everyone at some point.

Based on the schedule, I would say Pittsburgh had the advantage. Having about a week to rest between games will help a team, but you also have to understand, every team in the NHL will have a bunch of back to backs this season. Most of the athletes in this league are used to traveling cross country since they were in junior hockey. However; based on the roster, Toronto had a serious advantage, and they didn’t use it. It really wasn’t the Pittsburgh Penguins that showed up, but more of their AHL affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. A mainly AHL team showed up to beat the Leafs 7-1. The leafs had either Matthews or Tavares as their 1C while the Pens were using Evan Rodrigues as their 1C. Their is a HUGE difference in the playing level between the aforementioned players.

Going back to the schedule, the leafs may have been tired, but they can’t use that as an excuse for the game against the pens. They are professional athletes who, for the most part, have been in the NHL since 2015.

This is what happens when you don’t resign all the depth and try to replace it with bargain basket players. I don’t care how the media hypes all of these guys coming in there is a reason they are making a million dollars and not 3 like the player they are touted to be.

Once Toronto gets the next win, you will have forgot game #6 of this 82 game season ever happened.

And it will be under a completely different set of circumstances than what I described in this post.

Please don’t tell me you’re actually trying to justify why they lost to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

It was an embarrassing loss regardless of the “circumstances”.

They need to make changes asap. Mitch marner said after the game that they shouldn’t be concerned. What? Did we see a different game than he did?

If the Leafs lost to the same team after spending about a week at home without playing a back-to-back (which Pittsburgh did), then I would be having a completely different conversation.

People really underestimate how much of an advantage or disadvantage that the schedules of two different teams can bring to a single game.

By the way, most of what professional athletes say to the media after every loss is scripted and coached by someone.

I'm the not one panicking and encouraging the Leafs to rip their team apart.

Getting spanked by a team missing 5 major players tends to cause one to lose their mind.
