I like the logic but a player being paid 2.5 million to be on a checking line is a little hard to swallow. Especially on a team tight against the cap.

He also becomes irrelevant when Mikheyev comes back

Hell yes, to breaking Muzzin and Holl

What about Kerfoot Matthews Nylander. As stated Kerfoot plays well with Nylander. And this has the feel of the Hyman Matthews Nylander days. Then Bunting Tavares Marner. Bottom six as you have it.

Ah yes.. the top line is struggling so let's mix up all 4 lines and things will magically be perfect!

It's been 6 games of 82. Chill out Leafs nation. The depth has been good and the stars will come around. Relax.

That’s the problem with Kerfoot, he is a square peg the Leafs keep trying to fit into a circle. He is not a top 6 FWD (tho paid like one on this roster), not a shutdown C, is not good offensively. I feel like people are blinded by a 7 game performance and not taken into account how poor he is offensively. He is ok defensively but no better than Kampf, Engvall, Kase, Mikheyev, all who make significantly less. Kerfoot’s versatility is no longer of value. They need an impactful top 6 FWD. He most certainly is not Hyman.

It's funny how the leafs cap is so tight people are so upset at that. Check out the islanders bottom 6 for pay.

But the reason Ritchie is on the fourth line is Kampf. With Kampf as our 3c it has to be a checking line as he cannot produce much offense. Ritchie on the other hand is a bad defensive player. So because he can NOT actually play on a checking line, it's line 1, 2, or 4. So he's going to down to line 4 which is more of a banging/energy line in the above

Why is he not a top 6 fwd? His even strength scoring is probably top 40 for a lw

Actually I've been saying this since the preseason. I think kerfoot and engvall make sense as described. I had Ritchie and Bunting opposite before. But I think it makes sense now.

Beating a dead horse, I’ve said my thoughts on him before. But for one last time: he does not drive offense in any regards and that has been what makes him seem miscast as a potential top six winger. He’s not physical and even if he does finish his checks they aren’t much of a deterrent. As for Kerfoot’s offensive production last season his G/60 was the lowest of his career, and his P/60 was his lowest as a Leaf and second lowest after the year that saw him traded from Colorado to Toronto.

Edit:
If he is there answer to the top 6 they are in trouble

The 4th line has been Toronto's most consistent line, why break that up? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Nylander and Tavares have had plenty of chemistry over the years and Bunting has fit in perfect beside them, nothing guarantees Bunting has that success beside Matthews and Marner. Again, something that's not broke so don't fix it.

The checking line has been doing its job and each player compliments each other well. Could be changed up a bit, but doesn't need to be looked at as a concern.

Ritchie is the same type of player that Hyman was - both aren't great skaters but they're there to dig the puck out of the corners. Yes Ritchie is frustratingly inconsistent, but he earned that role out of camp for now. 6 games into the season is a pretty small sample size when so far he's been exactly what you should have expected.

I'm not saying that Toronto should be opposed to a change, personally I think they should just swap Marner and Nylander and leave the rest as is. Nylander would be a better compliment on the top line cause he's more of a shooting threat than Marner is but he can still find Matthews with a pass if needed so it opens up more ice for both of Nylander and Matthews. While Marner had his best season alongside Tavares so reunite them and see if it gets him going.

But again, the lines shouldn't be messed with too much just to get 1 line going. You risk messing with chemistry too much by doing that and that could hurt you more long term than you realize.

I like these lines.

The top guys aren't producing right now though. No line combos can fix it.

Once Matthews starts rolling the Leafs will be back in business.

He has 46 even strength points the last 3 seasons. It's essentially the same as guys like Backstrom, Forsberg, and others of that ilk. Most teams don't have 6 top end guys in their top 6. He is a totally adequate top 6 lw.

The lines have all shifted anyway pre and post Matthews being off. Essentially every "line" on the leafs has been more of a pair.

Kampf/Kase for the checking line and spezza/Simmonds for the 4th line.

Engvall was on the checking line and amadio on the fourth before Matthews returned. So I'm essentially just saying put those lines back to engvall on the third and Ritchie in place of spezza.

The top lines did shift because of Matthews return anyway.

But honestly I never loved the Ritchie pick up nor his place there and the comparisons to Hyman are why people are mistaken. Hyman is a gritty guy who fights for the puck and digs it out. He's a very good two way forward and can play up and down the line up. For his career he averages 113 hits/82 gp. He's physical and gritty but not a crazy intimidating tough guy. If you need a term for him he'd be a skilled grinder.

Ritchie is more of a big hitting, intimidating guy who when he is scoring is a traditional power forward. He's actively bad defensively and isn't digging pucks out of corners so much as just clobbering guys into corners. He averages 204 hits per 82 gp season. He certainly has a role and on most teams he'd be a good third line winger. The issue is the leafs have decided the third line has to be a defensive one and he can't do that.

So based on who we have I think making a nasty 4th line and letting him be the big body on the pp is the best way to use him

Ugh, I hate that I even had to look this up, I don’t understand the love for Kerfoot:
Kerfoot 44 5v5 points last 2 years as a Leaf) (121 games)
Backstrom 48 5v5 points (last 2 years) (only 116 games) he adds to that total if given 5 extra games
Forsberg 45 5v5 points (last 2 years) (in only 102 games)

Mentioning Backstrom and Forsberg in this same breath as Kerfoot is ridiculous. They are nowhere near close, that is a terrible comparison (“essentially the same as guys like Backstrom, Forsberg, and others of that ilk”) they are not the same ilk.

If you want Kerfoot in your top 6, fine.

I look forward to the day he is traded for a top 6 winger.
