Why trade for him when you could have got him for free via waivers a week ago

Weird

I know its a 7th but even 7th round picks sometimes prove to be gems

Weegar, Kubalik, Johnsson (before the injuries) can tell you that.

Kinda sucks cause I had high hopes for him for quite awhile, but last year he kinda showed he would top out as a replacement-level 4th line guy with the Sharks. If the plan was to give other guys looks instead of Gambrell in the future, I suppose giving him a chance with a new team where he might play more isn't the worst idea.

He was placed on waivers two weeks ago and we could have claimed him for free.

I voted for San Jose because of that.

Other than that, I like this trade smile

When he was placed on waivers, Shane Pinto was still a young healthy #2 C.

Big reason we made this trade is because Norris-Paul-Tierney-Shaw is not going to cut it for us.

Could have claimed him and made him an extra or 4c over Shaw

That's definitely true.

We thought we could roll with the centre depth we had before this trade.

Turns out, we were wrong scream

Don't hate it. Nick Paul had a great 1st game at 2C with Stützle, so I get why they'd be comfortable targeting a 4C instead of someone higher in the lineup. I still think they should have looked for someone more impactful though.

And sharks are really good at late round drafting.

Pavelski, Braun, Bonino, Labanc, Balcers, Chmelevski

Gamby is definitely an NHL player. He proved a lot last year and while his offensive ceiling is low he is a steady, consistent 4th line Center with good defensive ability. He's reliable. I am glad he landed somewhere he'll get a chance.

For people that are wondering why they didn’t just claim him off waivers…
If they did they would just have to waive him again when pinto gets back. Instead, Gambrell is now waiver free for another idk 26 days.
Kinda like the Galchenyuk deal last year

Like the fit for Gambrell in Ottawa. Wonder why another team makes a trade giving up assets from a formerly waived player.

Somehow this trade will be used in order to justify Eichel trades

Trade for him because since he went on waivers and cleared he won't have to clear again to go to the minors, maybe?

Ottawa wins just because Gambrell has potential and has looked decent. The 7th is a bad magic bean

Unless you're Montreal, a 7th round pick has a very low chance of becoming anything. Atleast Ottawa gets a fringe NHLer.

Small win here for Ottawa, but likely won't ever make a difference.

Now that Gambrell is off the board, look for Eichel to be next e4

Good young, cheap 4C for a 7th

Nothing wrong with this for OTT other than the fact they could've claimed him a week ago.

Because if you grab him on waivers, then you would have to waive him if you sent him down. Now that he's cleared waivers, he's waiver except for the rest of the season. At least that's how I think the rules work. It's complicated.

Gambrell struggled initially because he didn't have the offense to be another above a 4th liner, but didn't have the defense to be reliable enough in the bottom 6. By the time he became responsible enough, he was an offensive black hole, and became victim to the Sharks center depth.

I can't see how this isn't a win for SJ. With Weatherby and Chmelevski there was no way he was ever getting called back to the Sharks. Sharks got something for someone that was never going to play on the big team.
