What Devils pay for Marner Kravtsov Brannstrom Strome etc

Created by: NHLfan10506
Team: 2021-22 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 25, 2021
Published: Oct. 25, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Since these guys seem to be part of every ACGM trades, here is what I would pay for each of them.

Comments are welcome. But if its just going to be "that's not enough...[player] starts with [untouchable devils player]" or something similar, please consider offering first how this player would help the Devils more than what we would be giving up (over the long-term).
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Foote, Nolan
  2. Johnsson, Andreas
  3. Kuokkanen, Janne
Additional Details:
Foote (A-rated prospect, almost NHL ready), Kuokkanen (a top-10 rookie from last year and current top-sixer), Johnsson (back to find his magic), and $5 million in cap space. We are not moving core pieces or potential lottery picks in any of these deals.
2.
CHI
  1. Schnarr, Nathan
  2. 2022 4th round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
We do not really have a need for him, so the price is going to be underwhelming from NJD. Plus $3.6 million Qualifying Offer next year when we have more than 4 centers already puts him as likely 1-year pick-up unless he outplays McLeod in a checking line role.
3.
OTT
  1. Thompson, Tyce
  2. Walsh, Reilly
Additional Details:
Before the whole Will Butcher thing last year, I think I would be more aggressive. But I am just not sure Lindy wants this type of offensive d-man unless he views him as helping on defensive zone exits. I went with two lesser prospects for one (never a crowd-pleaser), both have some upside as NHL regulars. Walsh is a puck-moving RD. Thompson is a offense RHC/RW who just needs to bulk up a bit and get more adjusted to forechecking game.
4.
NYR
  1. Pytlik, Jaromir [Reserve List]
  2. Vukojevic, Michael
Additional Details:
I wasn't sold on Kravtsov in his draft and certainly not sold on him now. I would put a 2nd / 3rd round prospect value on him, so I am offering two recent 3rd rounders as options (one or the other) and can add a late pick. Both play with some size / physicality. Pytlik (6'2" 200 lbs) is a big center with some offense, but has been known for inconsistency. Vukojevic (6'3" 212 lbs) is a big project d-man with great puck skills.
5.
TOR
  1. Okhotiuk, Nikita
  2. 2022 2nd round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
Have also seen a lot of Rielly to NJD offers. I do not think NJ would have much interest in him. For one, he is a rental. So we'd only do it if we were contenders this year. Secondly, we would not likely re-sign him since our LD pipeline has a number of options on the way. And third, we have offensive d-men in Hamilton, Smith, Severson, Subban. If anything, we would need defensive options more. Okhotyuk (a hard-hitting, physical LD) and a 2nd round pick.

I understand your logic, however, that doesn't get you Marner, Rielly or Strome I'd say

I wouldn’t think so. But I also think some other teams could make better use of - and in the case of Rielly and Strome, resign - them.

On the flip side, how Walsh and Thompson would help the Sens more than Brannstrom should be considered as well.

I made a post on how Ottawa should come to terms with Brannstorm's trade value a little while ago that might be worth reading.

It uses trades from the past as precedent for trading someone like Brannstrom.

I picked Walsh and Thompson since I had believed that Ottawa needed young guys on right side. Thompson is a right-handed center / right wing who likely turns into RW at NHL level. I think he can become a scoring middle-six winger. He often gets overlooked because he was drafted very low (4th round) but he broke out the year after his draft (was top-5 in NCAA scoring that year). Devils RW pipeline is getting a little crowded with Holtz, Clarke and Stillman on their way. Walsh is an offensive RD that was part of those great Harvard bluelines (Fox, Marino, Rathbone, Walsh). We have $22m in RD on roster now (Hamilton, Severson and Subban) with Luke Hughes on the way (Smith and Bahl also played RD in juniors). So Walsh is kind of boxed out for time-being.

Does that not fit what Senators are looking for?

Whenever a team needs to make a trade, they need not only a good fit but also enough value to justify making the trade.

Brannstrom has played 9 times more NHL games than Walsh and Thompson combined.

There's not enough value for Ottawa here.

Sorry.

Maybe not, but cannot imagine it’s too far off. The Athletic recently has done re-drafts of both their draft years, and they have Walsh as a 2nd rounder and Thompson as an early 3rd rounder (they had Brannstrom falling to #22). If that gives us a guidepost to how teams potentially value these players, I’d say it’s pretty close to a match for value.

I don’t think that’s anywhere close to enough of Marners value. Foote isn’t the type of sure thing prospect that would have to be moved, I see Kuokkanen as a middle 6 winger at best and Johnson’s value is at its absolute lowest (wasnt high to begin with looking at the Anderson trade). One thing I’ve been thinking about is, can Daws play well enough to take over the starters net and make Blackwood expendable? Blackwood has been lights out when he’s on but very inconsistent. It could be interesting to piece together that kind of move to get Hughes or Hischier and elite top line winger. Cap aside his numbers last year speak for themself and I think he would thrive outside of a pressure cooker market like Toronto

Based on actual drafts from the last 10 years, it appears as if it costs more than a 2nd and an early 3rd to get the #22 pick in a given draft year.

Just FYI.

I don't think we can even ask that question for another year or two.

Yeah, looks like it would take a little more if we were to peg to those draft values.

If this were a real trade discussion, and I were Sens GM, I'd be asking for:
-- Arseni Gritsyuk
-- Reilly Walsh
-- A conditional 3rd round pick (that becomes a 2nd with EB's GP)

Gritsyuk has much higher ceiling long-term than Thompson and is in middle of break-out year in KHL.

I’d love to see NJ get Marner. That offer def doesn’t get the job done. Would be interested in seeing what one of the few Toronto fans with a good head on their shoulders would want back from NJ for Marner

It’s a long shot to happen this year but if he puts together a really good stretch of games while both of the goalies are hurt, it wouldn’t be the craziest thing to see at the end of the season.

To be honest, this is just mostly ACGM fodder. There is nearly 0% chance Toronto trades Marner, especially if their GM's job is at stake.

I think Wedgewood may be a candidate to get moved if Daws plays well.
I don't see Bernier or Blackwood going anywhere for awhile.
