Sabres left d- dahlin, power, hagg, butcher, samuelsson (recent 2nd, kjells kid), ryan johnson (recent first), and jacob bryson (organization likes the kid). I get the idea that you wanna move your left d for basically nothing, but it wont be buffalo.

What's the idea for keeping Meier considering he has a 10M qualifying offer?

Simek is a decent shutdown Dman on a decent contract. someone will take him, doesn't need to be buffalo.

Pay him ten mil. That 10mil doesn't have to be against the cap, it can come in bonuses as well..as long as his base is 10mil.

I didn't know that it could be 10M including bonuses. What would a 7-8 year deal for Meier look like?

He's making 10mil in base in this ACGM but his cap is only 6. Depends how the rest of the season goes, he's got 8 pts in 5 games now. Probably around 7mil for 4-5 years.

He'll never make it to QO, and if he is offered it, its more of leverage for a long term deal, no agent is going to suggest you take a large 10M/1yr deal over a 7yr 6.5M deal.

Signing bonuses count against the cap.

is that in the new cba? Weber's bonuses didn't count against the cap.

Exactly this. I usually include the caveat of anywhere in the trade description but you're right it probably won't be BUF unless SJ pays BUF which might work for them to stay above the cap floor if they trade out Eichel for futures, but Simek still has value for a mid-to-low draft pick. Then again, I'm not too sure Dahlin will be in BUF for long and I personally wouldn't count Hagg as legit depth.

Um, his bonuses very much do count against the cap.

sign him long term. if he keeps playing like he is this year an 8 year 6.5mil AAV with the 1st year actual pay of 10 min and then decreasing as it ages sounds like a smart move.

you make his year 1 actual salary 10 mil and then have his actual salary shrink each year, and 8 year 6.5-6.75 sounds about right (think Hyman or RNH deal for comparison)

yes but a roster bonus or signing bonus in year 1 will give him an actual salary of 10 min and then the rest of the 8 years he will be paid slightly less than his cap hit but it would equal out to the 6.5-6.75 AAV
in the end

Thats not how QO's work, SJ has to offer him a 1yr/10M contract by the QO deadline to retain him. It has no bearing on a different contract he could sign.

My point is he'll be signed to a long-term contract well before that deadline.

So he could sign a deal completely unrelated to his qualifying offer as long as its before the deadline?

Meier would be 27 on the 1st year of his new deal and 34 at the end of his 8 year deal.

Hence the 5-year extension I have here for the 28-yr old rather than the typical 8-yr extension we're used to doing.
