Marner Should Take Time Off Like Drouin

Created by: Agent_Of_R9
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 25, 2021
Published: Oct. 25, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think Marner needs to take some time off to work on his mental health. It's easy to underestimate the pressures that a highly paid athletes faces but they're humans too, and right now, he's not functional and its impacting the rest of the team. The best case scenario for him and the team would be if he steps away from hockey and let the team use LTIR to get Eichel, come back when you're ready.

Or the fanbase could actually show some him some support rather than just making assumptions about his mental health and saying he should be off the ice.

I’d say this smells like a Kucherov LTIR’ing until playoffs, but…

That's the entire future you're mortgaging there. I'd rather have a prospect pool that's more than just Niemela instead of another 10 million dollar forward.

Pretty crappy offer for Eichel, There's noway he's playing wing in Toronto and he's an expensive #3C. And Eichel wont even be playing at least until the playoffs. Once he has his surgery you're looking at a 4 to 5 month recovery period. He wont even have his surgery until he's dealt to his new team and that's still aways yet.

I'd be happy with a 3rd for Stecher but so far this season I'm not sure he's even worth that. I didn't think he'd get traded before the TDL but if Lindstrom continues to play well it wouldn't surprise me if he went before that.

I love how everyone’s picking on Marner. It’s not like your leading goal scorer is Jason Spezza or anything. The fact of the matter is, it’s a team game and Marner needs support from not only the team, but management, and the fan base. Don’t get me wrong, the Leafs have a solid roster, but it’s also the start of the season. When you’ve only played 6-7 games and have only registered a point, it looks bad. But there are times during the middle of the season where the same thing happens, except it doesn’t look as bad because you’ve already played 40+ games and scored 40+ points. Players go through rough stretches, you just need to support them and hope they can pull out of it. If Mitch played for a smaller market team like Anaheim, San Jose, or Arizona (no offense to the fans of those teams), then he would hardly be talked about. It’s the Toronto spotlight; he’ll pull through, you just need to have patience.

Thanks for the insight, I’ll trade for Lindstrom then.

Obviously that’s the plan but it’s the best case scenario for Mitch. He takes time off, comes back when there’s no cap in the playoffs on a stacked team. No pressure.

I exaggerated the Eichel trade, I wanted to emphasize what his ability is. But given current circumstances, Amirov + Robertson + Sandin + Liljegren should be enough.

We’ve supported Mitch and given him the benefit of the doubt that he can overcome his struggles. At this point, every Leaf fan can see the problem - he is putting too much pressure on himself and taking full blame for the Leafs’ playoff failure. Saying he needs to be off the ice is not meant to be taken as an insult cuz it could happen to anyone.

Thanks for the insight. If Eichel isn’t available we can still acquire him & add some other pieces to be 20 Million over the cap come playoff time 🤣

I agree that every player struggles in a long season but is unusual is the fact that Marner has struggled in this fearful, disengaged manner for 3 seasons now nonstop. Ever since he signed the contract, it seems like he is scared to make a mistake out on the ice. Always tries to make the perfect play which fails and is generally not using his senses. It’s been 3 years and gotten to a point in which he has declined to sub replacement level. I don’t think it’s unfair to suggest he needs help beyond what is provided from his team.

Pretty cool how Krebs, a 1st and 2 2nds was too much for Eichel, but because we're talking about Toronto, literally all their prospects is a bad offer.
