You have to think they would’ve used some cap space on a 2LW and a 3C.

I think JT is awesome, but Kadri and Hyman +1M vs JT is something I have to think about.

My issue is the proof that in making a championship team it has been shown for over a decade that there is a formula. That's been thrown out the window by Leaf's management.

Since the salary cap era started no team had ever...EVER... won even a single series with a player on the team making over $10 MIL...until last year which was a fluke due to the pandemic realigned divisions. With these known facts Dubas not only signed one player over $10, he signed 3. Once that happened I knew the Leafs were handcuffed financially again for many years and would have to go through a rebuild again in 10 years to try to win it in 15 - 20 years IF franchise caliber stars again are available in the Leafs drafting positions.

Matthews and Marner would have signed for cheaper without the JT signing ( it rased the bar and TML had to pay them more since their stats were similar the next year).

So even more capspace would have been available.

But everybody knows that already...

This post is pretty dishonest....

Erasing the consequences of a bad signing doesn't mean no good moves could had been done...

It's just a bare minimum of what had been.

leafs had JVR, bozak, and komarov leaving in UFA. Their leading scorer, a veteran centre and a huge team guy/reliable checking forward. The leafs made a calculation that dropping $11M on a then-franchise centre was preferable to paying like $16M to bring those guys back (also keeping in mind JT was the youngest of all 3)

it was a sticky situtation compounded by the fact that all 3 of the big guys were in need of extensions in like 1-2 years time. it was a good move then, but obviously JT is overpaid and can't drive a line like he used to
