What’s the point of downgrading players?

The way hes struggling right now and was fairly invisble in the finals, I dont think anyone comes close to Gallagher and that pretty hefty AND lengthy new contract.

They are both struggling change of scenery might help their production. Gallagher was always number one right wingers until Anderson Toffoli and now Caufield got to Montreal. Montreal had three good centers in Suzuki Danault and Kotkaniemi there's a hole at center now. Monahan would likely sign an extension to more or less depending on his future productivity. So length of contract doesn't really matter.

True, but length of contract on Gallagher counts alot.

If we take away the struggles in Gallaghers game dating back to last season and this.

Biggest weakness besides his current level of play is because of his style of game and his size a long term HEFTY contract to a 29 yr old is injury concern.

And if Gallagher is dependent on a center, going to CGY when they're moving center Monahan seems a poor move. So his issues about centermen and depth chart are still both issues in CGY.

Its not the direct comparison between Monahan and Gallagher. Which in its simplest terms with 2 struggling players is 6.5 for 6 yrs at 29 yrs old, or 6.4 for 2 yrs at 27 yrs old.

Its just Gallagher at 29 yrs old and 6 yrs at 6.5mil is a risky pickup for anybody: current struggles, age, size, style of play, length/size of contract

He was part of the shutdown line with Danault in the playoffs. 53% possession with 66% dzone starts. He wasn't invisible, he took on a role and played it well.
The whole team is struggling offensively to start this season. He's also being used to help Evans, as he has a positive effect on his linemates wherever he plays.
The production will come. It always does.
His line with Evans has only allowed one goal this season, so that part of the plan is working.
