Keeping Blais over Strome

Description
Realistically, I think the Rangers can only keep one of Blais or Stromer, unless they can get some ridiculously team friendly deals out of both of them or get Fox for much cheaper than "everyone" anticipates. If they do decide to keep Blais, and if he does continue to have the success he's had in this small sample size, I think they should get him on a semi-long term deal, at around 3-3.5mil for 4+ years. Yes, he's an RFA on arbitration and they can probably get him on a cheaper 1 year deal, but this only pushes the envelope to the next year and beyond, where he could keep improving and command more money. He's everything the Rangers are looking for; size, physicality, and has been showing some really impressive skill plays. He should definitely be locked up.

Sub the backup goalie and scratched players for similar AAV free agents if necessary. I'm just filling in the blanks. Fox can be plus or minus half a mil, and up to 8 years. I'm more focused on the money than terms, as usual.

The cap works for next year, where the Rangers have 13 contracts signed with 17.2million in space (assuming another 1mil raise, as projected). Next year sign Chytil and Lafreniere to 4mil deals, Miller gets a 2.5mil deal (slightly cheaper than Lindgren given less of a role), which leaves 6.7million for the remaining 5-7 roster spots on the 4th line/scratches. It'll certainly be tight, but definitely doable.

Good to see that Sammy is doing well so far in NY. He's such a fun player to watch; sneaky good hands. I thought he was gonna be the LW for ROR-Perron if he ever stayed healthy (but I'll take the Buch trade with no regrets)

I would say between 3 and 3.5mil is realistic for him, again, pending him continuing to produce and play as he has been in the first 6 games here. Why would you say otherwise?

I considered the trade to be more of a cap/roster dump, and Blais would be flipped at the deadline or just not re-signed... but wow, he's been really impressive. I really don't remember him much in STL, but according to his interviews he said he didn't have much of an offensive chance over there. He really does have some nice hands to go along with the size, that toe drag assist the other night vs NSH was a thing of beauty! STL definitely wins the trade, but it's not as bad as previously thought, I don't think. More of a team needs vs team needs, I guess

As stated in the description and comments, this signing is assuming he stays on the path. The average middle 6 winger certainly makes in the 3.5mil range, especially with him approaching the UFA years. Again, as stated, they probably can get him on a 1 year low money deal, but if he continues to improve it just pushes the envelope to next year and he could command more money

Yeah I always thought he was gonna pop in STL and then he'd get hurt every time he was really about to stick on a line (and then he'd have to work his way back into the lineup from the bottom) - part of the downside of being a big hitter. Happy to see him get a fresh start though.

Still a long road ahead....but if Blais plays to demand this type of money it might go a long way to pacify the "Buch trade haters"...keep in mind a 2nd in a deep draft is also coming. However- even though I doubt they'll be TDL sellers, it might make sense to move him at TDL or before draft to cash in on the value he seemingly would have accrued. Only because their CAP situation is about to get complicated (don't see Trouba or Kreider moved for a few more years) AND there are young players in the org they will not want to block- who will be cheaper (short term) and probably have a higher ceiling.

With Kravstov leaving, I think the Rangers need to keep one of Strome or Blais, or take a chance at getting a similar player off of free agency. Blais will very likely be the cheaper option. If you lose both I think it sets us back at least one year, if not two. Always gotta account for possible injuries and players needing to go up, etc.

I don't think any other member of the organization would be ready for a middle 6 role next year, especially not with the size and skill that Blais has shown in this small sample size, which is exactly what the Rangers are looking for. Gauthier has the size but doesn't seem to be anywhere close to that skill level of the in-tight toe drag assist to Laffy vs NSH. Gauthier kind of just skates directly at the net and hopes it goes in haha. Hopefully he shows something else this year if he gets a chance, but probably a reason he doesn't get the consistent lineup spot

Good points here...I guess another consideration is the return on Krav...picks? NHL player?
I'll be the 1st to admit...I have no idea how everything will unfold. Lots to consider- but first thing is to see how this team actually gels under Gallant...I mean they're off to a decent start point wise- but mainly on the back of insane G play. Doubt they can afford to extend Strome- but let's see...and lets also see how Chytl plays. As far as Gaut goes, he does seem to have the size and speed to carry his line...but just doesn't stay in the lineup...nothing between the ears? Un-coachable? who knows- but they did like something in him to protect in exp draft...so it's head scratching why he doesn't get consistent starts...even with 2 top 6ers out!
