Description
Unpopular opinions here.
Kane and the sharks will come to a mutual agreement on a termination and settlement for his contract (Kane will be paid roughly ½- 2/3 of his remaining deal as a settlement, that’s the unpopular part of this projection)
Hertl will not be a shark next year, and Wilson knows it. Wilson is waiting for the sharks to slump and then he will trade him. Use those assets and some of his own to facilitate a trade for our next 1C because he knows like I do we have depth and solid prospects for the future… But we don’t have a future 1C on this roster or in the minors. We trade most of the assets from Hertl trade at the deadline to swap with Buffalo for Eichel. Here I have Robbins, Chytil, Labanc and 2 1sts and we also take the full Eichel contract out west, all those items check off what Buffalo wants for Eichel (4 1st rounders or 4 first round equivalents and a solid NHL regular and for Eichel to not play in the Metro where he can punish Buffalo)
Now we have a young Elite 1C to pair with Eklund on out top line, pushing Couture to 2C with Dahlin. Add Meier and a FA RW and now our top 6 is solid and playoff caliber, here I have Pavelski coming back on a 1 year deal (he will probably sign another after this as long as he is playing well) because I really only want a stop gap RW in our top 6 until a prospect like Coe or Weisblatt are ready to step up.
3rd and 4th lines are always fluid but Leonard slots back in a 3LW Bonino stays unless Bordeleau decides to forgo his junior year and signs his ELC. And on the 4th line Nieto for his PK and defensive abilities along with Weatherby. 3rd and 4th line RW are fluid with Balcers taking one spot and the other up for grabs with Weisblatt, Pederson, Blichfeld, Chmevelski. All vying for the final spot.
D is pretty status quo except for the final spot going to Merkley, Hatakka, Kinazev or Middleton.
And in net we keep the same look and why not! A huge reason we’re better is their play.

Pavelski and Vlasic are temporary pieces until the kids behind them start pushing for their spots then we let Pavelski retire or move on again and Buy out Vlasic. either way by 24/25 both are gone, freeing up cap space to resign the younger guys comming up.

*Dahlen (or Dahlén)
* Robins (one "b")

I think the Hertl deal looks okay, but I wouldn't be surprised if Buffalo passed on the Eichel deal.
If they wanted Chytil, they could just trade directly with NYR, who could add better pieces than Labanc and Robins.
Probably have to add Bordeleau

I Love him! He is a big but fairly speedy LD and he played extremely well his rookie year. Very little offensive upside, but he facilitates well and is a solid D man opposite a smaller offensive D man like Karlsson.
think a poor mans Paul Martin if you will, or another Justin Braun or Dylan Demello.

Robins or Bordeleau would be reasonalbe, one of them would have to be part of the trade IMO (they are not getting Eklund sorry). Both have played really well last year and are looking even better this year, but I see both with a 2C ceiling. the reason this works is Buffalo gets Eichel out of their division which is a big desire of theirs, they get 2 firsts which I don't think NY would do, and Eichel's NTC activates in July meaning he decides where he goes if they wait till the offseason further reducing his value, and no team in playoff contention can take on a 10 mil cap hit, nor would they want to lose any current NHL players this year for someone who wont be available to play till next year. I'm not saying your wrong but looking at the options i feel this is the best they are going to get... but who really knows.

I think Chytil, Bordeleau, two 1sts is about right.
Probably because I see Bordeleau as much better prospect than Robins, and more likely a top-6 forward at NHL level.
So if they are equals, and Buffalo is given the choice between the two, maybe it works.

I would rather Wiesblatt play top minutes in the AHL then 4th line. Maybe have Raska play 4th line with Viel. I think Viel-Weatherby-Raska will be our 4th line for probably the next 5-6 years come the start of next season.

Edit: I do really like this AGM. I think the Sharks already have almost every asset they will need for the future except that 1C and 1RHD. Merkley would probably be better suited to playing second paring as Karlsson enters his last years.

I’d say steady 2nd pair two way guy. His ceiling I see based off his play similar to Slavin (not that he will become as good as Slavin); just a great hockey player both ways. Dont think he’ll ever reach Slavin level but I’d say a worse Slavin, 2nd pairing, 4.5m guy is a safe ceiling.

You have to add Labanc for cap purposes. otherwise were in a tight spot.
Robins and Bordeleau are both similar size and showing well, not sure which is better (most likely Bordeleau), but both are close to the same and thats why we are able to let one go.

we will see, if they start playing well and look playoff ready they might make the deal. but like I said wherever we trade Hertl the pieces we get are the ones we use to trade for Eichel, so assume it as a 3 team trade.

I'm in the same mindset! we have lots of prospect talent but we lack a top D and 1C prospect. Karlsson is our 1 D for the next 5 years because of his deal, Couture is our 1C for the next year or two but then age is going to slow him down, and Burns is still playing well but he's not a top D anymore.
Ferraro is a stud but I don't see him as a #1 D man (more a really good #2/3 D man.) Bordeleau and Robins both look really promising but I see their ceiling as a solid 2C.
Viel is better suited as a 13th forward in my eyes, Nieto plays PK and is solid defensively and is still only 27/28 and cheap so him on the 4th line is good for me. I think your right about Weisblatt that needs this year and next in the minors before he comes up, but he has high IQ and is fairly feisty so 4th line sheltered min doesn't scare me if he shows well in camp next year, otherwise Pederson, Blichfeld, or Chmevelski would slot in on the 4th line. I prefer them over Raska only because we need more RH shots in our forward group, Raska will be up and down next year and should stick probably in 23-24
and this all is is fluid! players steping up or regressing will alter the lineup but this is my expectation/ Hope going forward.
And I'm getting this ugly feeling in my gut that Merkley might end up being a bust. but we will see.

I think his Offensive production will limit that ceiling you mentioned. to me he is more a Braun/ Dillon/ Murray guy. little to no offense but he doesn't hurt you in the offensive zone.
but his checking and physical play combined with his solid defensive game make him a 2nd pairing/ 3rd pairing guy who strengthens our PK and adds grit to the lineup. making him a perfect compliment to an offensive D man like Merkley (if he isn't a Bust) or karlsson. most likely a 2.5-3 mil a year guy down the road.

Unpopular opinion, that’s an overpayment for Eichel and as a Sharks fan I don’t want them to trade for him at all.

I go back and forth but a 24 year old Elite player signed long term will require substantial compensation.
the only reason I'm puling the trigger is we don't have a top line elite 1C, and we also don't have any 1C prospect and Couture as a 1c will only last 1-2 more years and Herl I love but he is looking slow and I fear signing him long term will backfire on us big time.

Cap makes it incredibly tough to resign Hertl long term. Trading Chytil to facilitate this move still leaves us short a center (3C).

I guess we’d have to see, Gallant hasn’t used him there, I think mainly due to injuries. I just don’t think Hertl is as much of an upgrade on Strome to move the needle for us. Especially considering the long term contract to keep him past this season. We’d only be further compounding our tight cap situation.

I’d say the cost would be worth it. Hertl is a better all around center then Zibanejad. He’s more playmaking focused and wouldn’t need Panarin to pad his stats. It would probably be a 2 mil difference between Strome and Hertl. You would clear 2mil by moving Chytil and get Hertl at around 7mil (he’s the type of guy to take less to win).

yes he is! he is also a beast in the playoffs.
and we never utilized him properly, Couture has always gotten the better wingers and Hertl has had to carry the other line. Pair him with Panarin and that could be Dangerous! plus Hertl is solid 2 way and would free up Panarin a bit to be more creative.

That’s fine if that’s what you see fit. I personally see it as locking up more money long term to another guy who’ll be in his 30s for the contract. I don’t like the move.

The cap is why I feel NY would prefer a guy like Hertl to Eichel. less assets to get him, and less cap. combine that with the fact Hertl is more proven in the playoffs which NY needs.

but I get the cap crunch and looking towards the future. I've done a dozen simulations and for the sharks we can work Eichel into the lineup and as the kids start getting into their arbitration/ offer sheet eligible years our bigger older contracts will be coming off the books combined with cap increases making it easier for us to keep our core younger players.

For us looking at 24/25 seasons Eichel, Meier, Eklund, Dahlin, Bordeleau, Leonard, Ferraro, Knyzhov, and Hill all be entering or in their prime years. combine this with our better prospects Coe Weisblat, Raska Gushin, Merkley Kinazev, Hatakka, and Gaudreau making contributions will make us a strong young team, and that doesn't take into account any players picked up in the 22,23 or 24 draft.
combine this with a few smart trades and FA pickups and we should be Cup contenders.
