I don't see how Tomas Hertl isn't worth a 1st + strong kicker if he's got an extension coming on top of it. Though I guess your package proposal along the lines of our Kevin Hayes deal to Winnipeg (who's actually a 2C), I'm still skeptical. Maybe something like 1st + 3rd + Kravtsov?

The thing is, mid season even if the team winds up signing the player to an extension, it rarely effects value much. Stone is the perfect example of that. So is hall.

Chytil and a first is a big time overpay.

I just don’t understand how someone can look at the rental market of the past decade, look at hertl and say it could be the equivalent of multiple firsts. First and a 3rd, maybe with a kicker. Just like always.

If the Rangers can extend a 27 year old two-way centre long-term for Chytil, a 1st, and a prospect outside of the top-100, I think they do it.

I think you are underestimating Hertl's value. Since 2018 he has 156P in 181GP. He plays big minutes and would slot beautifully on the Rangers.
      Panarin - Zibanejad - Kreider
      Lafreniere - Hertl - Kaako
^ That locked down would be insane.

there are a bunch more, you have to look to see the ones who rank after the 2021 draft, most of those have sharks from 12-5 overall.
you look at the ones from 2020 and before and we are middle to bottom prospect rankings, a lot of our kids flourished last year and we picked up solid hauls at the 20 & 21 draft.

Yeah.. Wheeler from The Athletic has them at 22nd, so does The Hockey Writers. Many people have them on the cusp of the bottom-10 and that's after a successful draft year.

Look at the date dude, those are old posts
the report your commenting on was done in Jan 2021, before all our 2020 prospects blossomed and before we got Eklund and Gaudreau in the 21 draft.
you have to look at ranking from after the 2021 draft

I don’t think most have them top ten.
It’s okay that analysts have different opinions. I don’t think that other poster deserved to get scoffed at.

Maybe. I just don’t think they would have to. Chytil is pretty good, and the rangers would be in a good spot to keep him as 3C. 1st and kravtsov seems pretty fair to me.

Yeah I could get behind that. I feel like most SJ fans would just rather resign him at that point though.

Well interestingly enough, sharks fans don’t participate in contract negotiations. Who says Hertl wants to stay? Who says SJ wants him back? I get the sharks have gotten off to a decent start, but they have to know they should be thinking long long term.

No complaints here. If I'm SJ and I look at the future of the team, I sell Hertl for the best package possible assuming they're out at the deadline

I agree with this except for #2. I don't think teams are increasing the package because he likes SJ.

Based on the team's prospect depth, and those large, aging contracts on defense, maybe selling him for an overpay at the deadline (say, Boston?) would be the best case scenario

I feel like Boston doesn’t have enough in their prospect pool to bring in Hertl. What are your thoughts?

I agree with you. I think if they use draft capital maybe they can think of something but another team is going to offer more.

I mean Lysell would be nice but I’m sure Boston doesn’t want to move him and he doesn’t fit the more immediate needs of the Sharks.

This is Tomas Hertl on an expiring contract you're trading not the second coming of Mario Lemieux!

      Ottawa is way overpaying here.

I wouldn't give up Ridly Greig alone

Brännström and some other pieces, sure

Connor Brown is also a key player and worth more than people think. I don't see why Hertl would be worth so much more (Greig + Brannstrom!), he's older than Brown and UFA to be while Brown has one more year at a steal 3.6 AAV

Time to copy/paste my Connor Brown FACTS again!

      - Among Brown's 19:17 TOI/GP in Ottawa, 2:45 were on the PK and only 1:32 on the PP. His overall dZS% has been 62.6% which is extremely high. Simply put, he is mostly used as a shutdown forward or on a matchup line.

      - Despite this defensive usage, he has been 61st for Even Strenght Points among NHL players since 2019-20 (not including 2021-22 yet). Look at the names around him on that list, they aren't all as good overall :

      http://www.nhl.com/stats/skaters?reportType=season&seasonFrom=20192020&seasonTo=20202021&gameType=2&filter=gamesPlayed,gte,1&sort=evPoints&page=1&pageSize=50

      Facts summary :

      - He has scored at a 24 goals/50 pts pace in Ottawa (127 GP)
      - He was 2nd in takeaways last season (behind Mark Stone of course)
      - He received Selke votes (17th)
      - Total beast on the PK : routinely gets more scoring chances than the opposition
      - used heavily in a defensive deployment (34.0 oZS% vs 66.0 dZS%) but still provides good offense

His speed, non-stop motor and flawless work ethic is a beautiful thing to watch. With only a 3.6 AAV for 2 more seasons... way too valuable for Ottawa and they love him a lot. Any team who has Brown should use him in a similar way that Ottawa has been

IMO, Connor Brown should be worth at least the equivalent of two late first round picks (which is what Blake Coleman was traded for).

Greig and Brannstrom are worth a late 1st round pick each.

When you add it up, the author of this post is essentially asking for the same value as 4 1st round picks in exchange for Hertl as a pending UFA.

When Ottawa traded Matt Duchene to Columbus, we only got one 1st round pick.

Does this trade idea from GoatBarzal seem fair to you?

      Yeah not really.

Add Ottawa's first round pick in 2022 and you basically have a return for Jack freaking Eichel

And IMO Greig is worth comfortably more than a late 1st round pick. He was drafted 28th OA, was 24th OA on McKenzie's list and his stock has done nothing but go up since. It's easy to see that he's going to be a stud

If you propose that to the Sabres, would they really refuse?

      2022 1st round pick (OTT)
      Greig, Ridly
      Brown, Connor
      Brännström, Erik

The only thing that should make them refuse is whether they are still above the floor immediately after the trade is made.

I don’t think most have them top ten.
It’s okay that analysts have different opinions. I don’t think that other poster deserved to get scoffed at.

i didn’t scoff at him just disagreed and provided reference

Well interestingly enough, sharks fans don’t participate in contract negotiations. Who says Hertl wants to stay? Who says SJ wants him back? I get the sharks have gotten off to a decent start, but they have to know they should be thinking long long term.

both Hertl and Wilson are on record saying they want to make a deal on a new contract
