2023-24 Simulation with Tomas Hertl

Created by: Masonh618
Team: 2023-24 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 27, 2021
Published: Oct. 27, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This ACGM is 2023-24. It will not be until 2024-25 until I can comfortably predict that the Rangers will not face a significant salary cap crunch with a Hertl contract, as both albatross contracts in Kreider and Trouba will become movable at that point. Moreover, there's a stronger chance that the salary cap will increase by a bigger increment than $1,000,000.

To conclude, this lineup does not look overly unrecognizable. There will be plenty of inevitable changes in every offseason. Obviously it stings to see faces like Filip Chytil or Sammy Blais depart, but that's just part of the business.

  1. Lowry, Adam ($1,625,000 retained)
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
I'm picking Lowry randomly, so to Jets fans, don't freak out about this rather offbeat proposal. I'm not specifically targeting him.

This whole idea is just a template for the Rangers: New York trades two priced out RFAs for a middle six center at 50% retained.
WPG
  1. Chytil, Filip [RFA Rights]
  2. Jones, Zachary [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
This is the stage where there are too many variables for anyone to feasibly make an accurate roster prediction. Based on my previous seasons, the best move for managing RFAs at this point is to trade them for cheaper depth. It's what New York did with Pavel Buchnevich.

Secondly keep in mind that the trade values of these players are going to be significantly different in two years.

@HOCKEYBOY448 @Fox_Czar_Cup My ACGMs have been published. Of course, I'm not going to demand you to respect this path lol, but I'm just trying to show how it's possible to work around the salary cap with another contract north of $7M.

I feel like it’s seriously cutting it close on some of those RFA deals, but overall good job dude. I do admit it kinda scares me that half the forward core is made up of Laf, Kakko, Barron, Cuylle, Othmann and Pajuniemi, but I hope to god by 2023-24 they’re all good to go and contribute in major ways. Certainly right that the summer of 24-25 is gonna be hell and require moving several big contracts. I’m curious if Lindgren is even feasible to resign the next year or if it makes sense to bring Robertson instead as he’d be cheap. Maybe if Lindgren takes a Pelech type deal or cheaper we can keep him. Only other major concern would be resigning Kakko at that point assuming he lives up to his potential. The rest could probably be resigned to cheaper deals. We gotta hope the cap goes up by more than a $1 mil for 24-25. As crazy as this sounds, the team today with Hertl in this scenario is probably more likely to win that the future 23-24 team. Guess it comes down to player development at that point. Thanks for taking the time to create this and send it my way.

Not freaking out or anything but the jets would have no interest in moving Lowry, especially for that. Nor would they retain while competing

Followed the threads...interesting for sure. A few things that I'd note:
-Hertl signing for a mil less than Zibanejad seems like a stretch, especially considering the fact that he's alledgedly not interested in negotiating in-season. Obviously that could change, but a trade with an extension would be surprising. We could get into the original trade value, but there's not a huge point...Basically reminds me a bit of the Mark Stone trade.
-I think the RFA signings are what make me leery...If Laffy is playing poorly enough to accept a 3 x $3.5 mil bridge deal, you're in serious trouble...
-I feel like, if you've managed yourself into a 21 man roster in 23/24, you're in trouble.

Fun to follow though!
