Prospects based on talent

Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 28, 2021
Published: Oct. 28, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Read the description: this is based on TALENT projections, I'm not saying this is the Leafs roster in two years time. The prospect that excites me the most is Topi Niemela, he's got 14 points in 16 games already in the professional men's league in Finland as a 19 year old. He could be a top 4 dman one day

Doing well there doesn’t translate to nhl as we have seen with Lias Anderson and now Kravs and others. Topi is tiny, like too small to hit Marner. 6’ frame but 160lbs, he needs 20-30lbs of muscle before making the jump and being top4. More soft D is probably the last thing you guys need

Could it be that NYR is bad at developing prospects?

I used those 2 as examples of guys who succeed overseas but not here, followed by many others( but to name 1 who seemed amazing in KHL but has flopped here.. Mikeyev)this isn’t a shot for shot about developing because that’s petty, this was me saying the tiny boy needs to become a man before he can have success here.

It's really difficult to translate "talents" of players in any league......junior, NCAA, European pro, even the AHL...into projections into NHL competence.
Point totals don't mean so much.
Personally, my thoughts on the Leafs prospects is they have few NHL players in their pipeline.

Toronto is really good at developing prospects. Kapanen , Johnsson, Brown, Hyman are only a few. On the goaltending/defence position, you’re probably right

He was named d man of the world juniors, which also doesn’t mean a whole lot, and yeah he’ll need to add 30 lbs, but he has the time.

Are they though? Hyman and kapanen were both traded to toronto. Hyman did the vast majority of his developing in college. Kapanen overseas. Johnsson is meh. Brown is meh. Then a bunch of top 5 picks. Then a laundry list of guys that were supposed to be the next big thing that didn’t (or haven’t yet), panned out.

If he can get to 185lbs in the next 2 years I’d say give him a go.
