Essentially we’re paying a 1st, Räty and Wahlstrom for Theodore. I love Theodore, one of the best d in the league at both ways, good term and only 26. But I’m not sure that’s what we need. I think this team is better off with Wahlstrom and Räty than Theodore. Develop Salo instead.

We don’t need to capdump Pánik for a 2nd rounder. He’s at 250k in the minors. - and he is a servicable player.

I guess it depends if you want to win this year. I think you guys have a massive hole at 2LD which will need filling. A long term approach would be to keep the prospects but I think you don't win this year without filling that hole.

I had to dump Panik to make the cap work but I think you could also just do a 22 man roster.

So the Sabres get Räty, Aatu Center prospect
Komarov, Leo cap equalizer
Wahlstrom, Oliver RW Prospect
Smith, Reilly RW
2022 1st round pick (VGK) and 2022 1st round pick (NYI)
That my friends is a boat load, makes me think it is too much!
Räty, and Wahlstrom fit right into Buffalo's rebuild along with the 2 firsts.

It is a lot but it's coming from 2 teams instead of one which helps spread it out. Like the Duchene deal.

Keep in mind these are likely low firsts, Raty was a second round pick, and Smith is essentially a cap equalizer as well.

It's definitely steep but in line with the 4 first or equivalent Buffalo wanted.

I get what you mean, but Reilly Smith is a good player, tough to call him a cap equalizer, even if it’s true. I don’t think Vegas moves him, I believe Dadonov (even if he just got traded to Vegas) or Tuch are much more likely to go before Smith. Räty was a 2nd round pick, but the consensus is that his pure talent is top-10 of that draft, and the Covid year was clearly tough on him. He needs to evolve the talent into product for sure, but I wouldn’t consider him a regular 2nd round pick, even if it’s literally true.

I would love Theodore, but I don’t believe people outside of Islanders fanbase has grasped just how good Wahlstrom is, extremely good underlying numbers and that matches the eye for sure. He’s a bonafide 30-goal scorer in this league, and I feel very comfortable to say that. Räty could be a good 2C and a 1st is always a 1st.

Fair enough re: Whalstrom, I addmitedly don't know much about him.

I generally agree regarding Raty, but consensus around GM's is he was a second round talent so that's where I'm placing his value. Even though I believe that is wrong.

Imo Tuch is worth more than Smith due to contract, age, and also the fact if VGK trades him they lose his LTIR space. Dadanov would make most sense for VGK to move to equalize the cap but I think he has more trade protection than Smith which might make a move to Buffalo harder.
