If Leafs had kept Jared McCann, they wouldn’t have a need for Ritchie and they could’ve used his cap to get 2 cheap depth pieces

I liked it at the time but he hasn't been great as a leaf, so ya, I'd prefer McCann to him in hindsight but it's fairly minor.

If Keefe is only going to play him 10min a night, I don’t see the point of keeping that cap hit. Something will have to give once Mikheyev is healthy and I would much rather keep Ilya than Nick

I just swapped out Holl for McCann and left it at that.

Perhaps they would have taken Dermott instead. Still leaves us with only 6 NHL quality defenceman. Injuries will happen. Seeing Liljegren and Dermott push Holl is absolutely great to see. But this is capfriendly so obviously there is only one true answer and it's whatever the mob has to say.

If Holl played like he did last season and the season before it would be fine but this year he and mizzin were not great for the first 8 games. Got a feeling both will rebound

Nah Hakstol and Dermot were not in good terms in the end and so he was probs the last guy to get taken

Holl was considered a lock to be protected. 2.5m for a top 4 defenseman (at the time)? No one was considering not protecting him,there wasn't really a debate. Fun hypothetical but the reality was Holl was always going to be protected.

I'm a major Holl criticizer, but I think it was the right move at the time. Liljegren was relatively untested in NHL waters, and Holl was excellent. Additionally, before the Mennell trade, our depth on the right side was Brodie - Holl - ??? - Liljegren - ??? - ??? Like I wanted Liljegren to get a chance, but what was the backup plan if he struggled? Dermott has had stints on the right, but nothing as permanent as he is on the right now. As nice as an elite LW would have been, it would've been at the cost of possibly having a hole in your top 4.
