RE: Price the Montréal Canadiens can either:

1. Pay him 10M per year for .910% goaltending

2. Pay him $9M per year to not play (buyout)

3. Pay him $5M to not play and get assets for him

Option 1 is not great bob, option 2 is a non starter but option 3 becomes more and more compelling as I think about it... they're stuck with his $ anyways

Why not reduce it by half and get assets back?

And now that they're rebuilding... golly 😕

At 6M, Price is a very intriguing option for a number of contending teams. I could imagine a team like the Wild or Oilers being very interested in him if they plan on a long run. I honestly wouldn't be too surprised if they pulled in a package including someone of Yamamoto's skill as well as an early pick.

By this logic we’re paying $5 million no matter what. So we can either pay him $5 million to play for us, or trade him. In which case we’d want him just as much if not more than Edmonton because he means so much to this team, so there’s 0 reason to trade him.

even at half price i don't think price is that appealing. his numbers are down and inconsistent. he's having both physical and mental health issues. id think most teams should pass.

if the habs buy out price next offseason its only $7m for 2 years, $6m for 2 years, and $500k for 4 years. habs should just use those $6m-$7m years to rebuild. the 500k is inconsequential.

Price is staying in Montreal because there are no other good options, we aren't retaining long term, we aren't buying him out, and he definitely won't waive

It’s way way too hard to judge fair value on a trade when there’s that many pieces in play. Just too many different perspectives need to consider. At the end of the day biggest declining factor is price contract even with retention it has term which very much complicates the offseason rather stick with Kosk and all those expiring depth contracts.

I agree with the top line of this 100%. The issue is, sure, cashflow-wise it's only $7 mil x 2, 6 mil x 2, etc...but the cap hit is $10+, $9+, $9+,$9+, then 4 years at $583 K. If you're only going to say +/-$1 mil on the cap, I don't think you ever consider buying him out. There's really zero value in buying out Carey.

Yup. I feel like a $6 mil goalie is tough sledding when your team already has $76ish mil on the books for next year and 15 guys signed.

yea, your right. i was looking at the wrong column. yeesh what a terrible contract. to think the habs could have had carte blanche and traded him instead of signing that contract.

that contract depreciated faster than a new car driving off the lot.

The contract depreciating is kind of funny, just because of how dominant he was in the playoffs last year. Like, a healthy, motivated Price is still extremely good, and unquestionably would be #1 on team Canada's roster. It's just that f*ckin' contract...

if you retain 5m on price what goalie are you getting to replace him? because you have to add that to the money you are saving realistically. so you are paying for price to play elsewhere and then paying someone else to play for you.

Imagine buying out the guy that has held our franchise relevant for 12+ years and has about half of the franchise records, you guys are pathetic.
His contract always becomes a subject of discussion when the other 72M$ of cap space aren't doing anything, anytime the team is productive Carey's contract goes back in the "Do no care" box until the next slump.
