Move Fox to C

Created by: aecliptic
Team: 2021-22 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 7, 2021
Published: Nov. 7, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Ideal stolen from HB Rangers board.

In 1967, the Maple Leafs were close to being solid enough to challenge for the cup. They had an all-Star defenseman named Len “Red” Kelly. With the team lacking cohesion and consistency up front, coach Punch Imlach, moved Kelly from defense to center. Kelly went on to become an all-star at the center position, and the Leafs won the Stanley cup that year.

Fox is moved to C. LAF and Miller are sent down for some fine tuning. Jones is brought up to play with Trouba, Barron slots in at 3C and Chytil is moved to LW.

Game is way too streamlined for that kind of stuff now

Well, after the Rangers blew the games against VAN and EDM, then got railed with no lube by CGY. Its worth giving some consideration to doing a makeover. It frees up the logjam on RD allowing the Rangers to bring up top prospect Schneider.

I believe Fox is more than talented enough to be able to pull it off.

why would you take the best defenseman in the league and turn him into a 2C? is that really the best use of talent?

yeah we can do a makeover without moving fox to center. just because it worked for toronto in the 60s doesnt mean it would work today, because it wouldnt. fox is perfect where he is alongside lindgren, strome works well with panarin, and chytil is kind of breaking out with laffy and blais. basically what you're doing is changing the exact things that are actually working perfectly within the team: the fox lindgren pairing and the strome panarin duo, just to do things that we can do either way. kakko, and laffy do need something to get them going, id say loaning kakko to europe, like we unintentionally did with kravtsov, and maybe sending lafreniere down to the AHL could help them out with their confidence. miller is fine where he is, he and trouba are playing really well together.

i mean its an interesting suggestion and all, but it just wouldnt work, and its kinda unnecessary

Well, if he still pots 90pts as a 2C while also elevating the top 6 forwards plus freeing up a spot on RD for a stud defenseman (Braden Schneider) that the team highly covets. Could be a win-win all around. Zac Jones is an offensively gifted defenseman (as is Nils Lundkvist) who could slot in as the point defenseman OR just dont change anything on the PP1 and leave Fox as the point man since the PP1 plays 90 seconds of the PP anyway.

I understand its a wild concept, but I think there a small chance that it could work. The Rangers offense (especially 5 on 5) is atrocious, might as well give it a try and see what happens.

Shouldn't the Rangers send Kakko to the AHL too?

He's still on his ELC and is pointless in 8 games so far, clearly he could benefit from some seasoning in the minors as his career isn't off to the best start.

Basically this whole paragraph says that the Rangers are doing fine, and were not, were terribly not. Rangers played 1 complete 60 minute game all year. Theyve won games on the backs of Fox and Shesty with little else.

The Rangers have lost their RW depth to make that move. I really like the kid Pajuniemi and would like to see him.

If you are going to have a defensemen on forward maybe centre is not the best place to have him. He would end up losing every face off.

Not enough to preclude it

It's funny you saying that when we've seen a number of players switch F/D in recent seasons even samuel Morin of all people- so why not adam fox?

Mr blindly cynical over here

With Adam Fox's hand eye coordination tho?🤨

Sure it'd take a while to adjust

But after many months of practice he could thrive

I think that's a big ask. He's probably got the hockeyIQ to do it. But probably best to keep him at D

This idea is cool and good and interesting

Why is hockey always so anti progress

I'd try it with Lafrenière tho first for sure

Such a smart and thorough player

Not sure why he isn't a C already

Moving LAF to C is probably the more realistic move.

I like your Kelly comparison, but your dates on wrong. Leafs converted Kelly to centre in 1959 after they acquired the Norris winner from the Wings.
Leafs were weak at centre and Imlach thought Kelly could handle the dominant centre in the league like Beliveau. Dave Keon joined the Leafs in 1960, solidifying the centre
position.
Kelly and Keon were the two best Leaf centres....maybe even their two best forwards in the 62,63,64 Cup wins.
