Mrazek and Ritchie proving to be wasted signings

Created by: MatthewsFan
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 7, 2021
Published: Nov. 7, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
For all of the good Dubas has done, the Ritchie and Mrazek signings have proven to be wasteful cap space:
Mrazek 2 games 2 injuries
Ritchie 12 games 1 assist -4 averaging only 12min a night (even less recently now that he is on the 4th line)

Management knew just how susceptible Mrazek has been to injuries throughout his entire career and still gave him a three-year deal. They have also handcuffed themselves when it comes to resigning Campbell next year with the lack of cap space. That 6.3 combined aav could have been better spent not only this year but next year also.
This team’s achilles heel for the longest time was never having a quality backup for Andersen. They finally found Campbell. Now Andersen is gone and they have failed to provide Campbell one. And as awesome as Jack has been he is an injury risk himself, having never played more than 33 games in a season and missing stretches of 2021 with a groin ailment also. And what are their options now, Hutchinson, Woll, or Kellgren, but having Erik in an NHL crease with less than 10 NA starts under his belt would be nuts!

And now with Ritchie regulated to 4th duties, getting around 10-12min a night, a -4 and only 1 assist. Yes he provides some toughness but I’d rather have Gabriel up on the 4th line a league min then Ritchie and his 2.5 🤷‍♂️

Am I wrong?

Well you can hardly blame the player or the team for injuries. Would Holtby or Halak signed with the Leafs and been better, or not injured? Yea, I didn't understand the Ritchie signing.

I never liked the Mrazek signing right from the start. I don't know what Dubas was thinking especially going through the injuries last season at the goalie position.

Wasn't thrilled with the signings when they happened. Was hoping to get proven wrong, but here we are. Still time, of course, but it's been underwhelming.

Sure, injuries happen. But they willing committed 3 years to an injury prone goalie, it would be one thing if it was a 1 year flyer but not for 3. That was a mistake

Yup, time will tell. Hopefully Hutchinson or Woll will be up to the task. Or we will be here again with this team having to make an in season trade for a 3rd string goalie

As much as everyone blames Lou for leaving Marleau and Zaitsev to be Dubas problem (which cost Dubas a 1st Rd pick and C. Brown) , next summer the new GM will inherit Ritchie and Mrazek ($6.3 million) and $62 million spent on 8 "core" players.

Could Ritchie become the first Leaf to be bought out since (I can't remember) and Mrazek be the first goalie to go to "Robidas Island" ?>

Dubas will be here next year. GM’s don’t get the ok to sign off on 8 year 60mil contracts if they are on the hot seat.

Edit:
Still doesn’t excuse these two signings tho

The Bunting signing was great, than 2 days later the Ritchie signing happened and I think most of Leaf Nation just cringed at seeing it.

Heck the Kase signing was 1 day after Bunting and 1 day before Ritchie. Dubas went from good, to ok, to bad in a 3 day span.

Holtby chose Dallas though, I doubt he'd go to another Canadian team after what happened in Vancouver, and the Toronto media puts more pressure. Could be wrong though.

Absolutely, I have no idea who Toronto could have signed or what goalie would have wanted to come to Toronto. Was just two goalies I liked and also signed for only 1 year. I think I’d be ok with the Mrazek signing if it was only for a year, not three. But I guess that’s what it took for him to sign here. IMO for a goalie with his injury history that was a gamble the Leafs shouldn’t have taken. Especially when Campbell is still without a contract for next year

Yeah I was thinking this too when the signing happened. Dubas seems to be all over the place with signings from great to just okay to cringeworthy.

There is always a calculated risk when signing FA. I just think they have now backed themselves into a corner by locking up Mrazek to 3 years. It is already hurting them now and will next year trying to resign Campbell. 🤷‍♂️
