Not Trading Girard for Scraps

Description
Ive seen so many posts trading Girard for a bunch of spare parts. The only return I think is somewhat realistic is a young top 6 forward with term. Avs arent going to trade a 23 year old top pair D man under contract for 5Mx6 for a older, less productive winger with less term and a couple throw in prospects and picks. They also arent going to trade him for prospects and picks while the Avs are trying to win now

I made some Girard trade frameworks that I think make (at least a little bit of) sense for COL. These are not 1-for-1's. Just examples of the quality of player that would be needed in a Girard trade

Girard isn't the type of defensemen the Canucks would be interested in

Tank will be 31 at the start of a new contract ans won’t be taking less than ge is making now. His age ans contract doesn’t make sense with the whole logic of moving girard. It’s for a young cost controlled top 6 winger. Older and more expensive doesn’t make sense

That's funny as I've seen him overvalued a lot

Good to see more balanced proposals like these

My favourite is for fiala

Note: Minnesota and Colorado will never trade with each other .
( Minnesota can't afford Another dman at that price, just can't. Just like Minnesota can't afford to get rid of a good offensive player)

Girard < Beoser, Batherson, Fiala
Girard > Garland, Buchnevich
Girard = Kubalik, Konecny

Let me throw two more out there: Tyler Bertuzzi (DET) and Adrian Kempe (LAK)

Girard, Samuel

Pass, Ottawa needs the right shot winger more than a left shot defenceman, once Sanderson arrives.

I don't think Ottawa is a good trade partner for Girard, especially since they have Brannstrom.

Look I get the whole in division thing, but this isn’t middle school. If there’s a trade to be made that both teams feel is good for their franchise, MIN will deal with Colorado.

Regarding your point about not being able to afford Girard, but also can’t afford to lose Fiala....huh? What exactly do you think Fiala is going to re-sign for? Girard is on a great contract. It doesn’t make sense to use the “can’t afford him” argument on Girard, but then suggest you intend to keep Fiala.

I wouldnt personally make this trade, but it’s certainly not ludicrous and you gotta dial back on the insta-No’s from MIN.

Thanks for these. while it's bonkers to see a made-up article result in all these Girard for bits and pieces that don't make sense for a win-now team, hockey trades that COL could actually pick up the phone for are interesting thought experiments. that fans of many of these potential partner teams aren't interested is a sign of relative fairness, a hockey trade hurts/helps both sides. Think COL's play will be to move Toews in 2023 w/a year left on hist contract to cover Byram's bridge - that may the time when they're willing to shift a top LD for picks/prospects so as to clear cap.

Agree to disagree. Minnesota isn't competing now, they can wait for their LD prospects to come up. If Minnesota trades Fiala it needs to be for a similar center or a package of picks/prospects including a good young center.

I like Girard a lot, but trading Batherson is a complete non-option for Ottawa. He's their top player this season, and he's a 1st line RW at less than 5mil AAV long term.

This is where my head went, Girard is on a fantastic contract that is better than what I think Fiala will get. That being said, I don't think I'd do this either since we need the help up front more than on the back end (especially now that we have O'Rourke, Hunt, and Lambos in the prospect system). It's an interesting idea, I just don't know if it's the right move for us.

You have to cut it out with these absolutes, man. I don't think any player on the Wild is truly untouchable as you have said in 90% of threads involving the Wild. Guerin is willing to make trades if he thinks it makes us a better team, he has been quoted saying this many times and I am almost positive he said it a few times in radio/podcasts over the summer. He has traded with division rivals before (Luke Kunin trade at the draft floor), I wouldn't rule out the idea of him doing it again.

Colorado would likely need to add for Boeser and Batherson, maybe even for Konecny too. Those might be non starters. Buchnevich is interesting, Fiala and Kubalik might get a yes as well but I'm not sure about fit with Vancouver and a Garland swap. Interesting ideas for sure though.
