Hughes is still unproven IMO, but if Gaudreau isn’t going to sign with Calgary it might be a good deal for them. On the other hand, unproven at 20 should not be cause for concern for New Jersey. They don’t have much use for a rental, but if they can sign Gaudreau it looks like a pretty good return for Hughes. Another factor is that he’s a pending RFA, and it could be a difficult negotiation of he doesn’t have a breakout season, so teams may not like that uncertainty.

I'll second the first part, but Calgary might not mind the uncertainty concerning Hughes' potential. I mean, they took Dougie Hamilton off of Boston's shoulders way back when

IRL Devils would never do this
