Please tell me why Vancouver would trade a top 5 goalie in the league on a bargain of a contract for absolute trash?

So far this season: Demko 12 GP 3.33 GAA .898 SV% vs Jarry 10 GP 2.23 GAA .929 SV%
20-21 season: Demko 35 GP 2.85 GAA .915 SV% vs Jarry 39 GP 2.75 GAA 909 SV%
19-20 season: Demko 27 GP 3.06 GAA .905 SV% vs Jarry 33 GP 2.43 GAA 9.21 SV%

Over the last two plus seasons in a similar number of games played Jarry's numbers are better. Your assertion that Demko is top five while Jarry is absolute trash is absurdly statistically unsound and therefore your question is logically faulty. Jarry is a statistically better player on a cheaper contract. The better question is why would the Penguins make this trade.

The team in front of them plays a big part their statistics. Vancouver has had a horrendous team and even worse defense for years now.
As for Demko's numbers this season, his numbers were good up until the couple of games, last game the Canucks had 3 AHL defenseman in their lineup. There's lots of chatter about Demko being on team USA's Olympic roster, to even be in the conversation for one of those 3 spots shows his worth.

I agree on all points. I think Demko is a better player than Jarry. As a Pens fan, I would not have proposed the trade if I did not feel it was beneficial to the Pens. By answering the question as I did, I was simply pointing out that the gap between them is not nearly as ridiculously large as Aasen6 made it out to be. From the Canuck's standpoint, perhaps the slight downgrade in the position is worth the cap savings which could be used to upgrade weaker positions such as the defense.

If this trade was on the table Pittsburgh would accept it in under 2 seconds and anyone who knows anything about hockey knows that. Realistically Pittsburgh has to give up jarry 50% retained Kapanen and a 1st for demko
