I saw something that you can't trade an offersheeted player for a year

Only if the offer sheet is matched. This is one where the Habs did not match and traded it for draft picks instead. This contract is free to trade to any team.

I'd have a hard time saying no to that offer.

Interesting that a 4th liner 1.25m Engvall gets dumped on by so many on this site, for his 16 points in his last two seasons of 58 games. But 6.1m KK seems to no criticism for his 23 points in 69 games.

Because dumping on Engvall is stupid. Again, the KK contract is similar to what Bill Guerin did with Goligoski this year. They had the cap space this year to overpay the two for a year to get them on board.

That's the difference between a 21 year old and a 25 year old.

I just wonder if 6.1m could have spend better, on a short term UFA rather than KK...and then save e the picks too.

I actually don't know. KK was clearly a long-term bet for Carolina and not a short-term one. They're betting that it's going to pay off later on.

Yep that was the gamble. But his QO of 6.1m probably won't happen and he will be a UFA, though I suspect KK owes Carolina some loyalty for his bloated 6.1m deal.

The rumor is that the Canes and KK already had agreed to terms on an extension at a far lower cap hit, and they were waiting until January to announce it.

There are a lot of moving parts to this trade.

After looking at this trade carefully, I think Carolina is better off declining.

1. The addition of Holtby is redundant because the Canes brought in Andersen and Raanta this offseason.

Holtby is also a shell of himself from when he won the Cup with Washington in 2018.

With retention, a generous team might pay a 2nd for Holtby.

Assuming Cotton + Mattheos is worth a 2nd, that means it's Klingberg for everything else.

2. Suzuki and Bokk are both former 1st round picks.

Carolina is also giving up another 1st after spending a 1st and a 3rd to get Kotkaniemi in the first place.

3. In other words, you're asking Carolina to give up at least four 1st round picks in value for Klingberg and to retain 3 million on Kotkaniemi.

Carolina says no.
