Best Case CBJ TDL

Created by: jb246810
Team: 2021-22 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 15, 2021
Published: Nov. 16, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Using Arizona as placeholder since they have all the draft picks

These trades leave us with zero depth. We should look to add a couple players from teams trying to get cap compliant as long as the compensation is right. We should also look to be a second retention in other deadline trades as well.
Trades
1.
CBJ
  1. 2023 7th round pick (VAN)
  2. 2024 7th round pick (ARI)
ARI
  1. Harrington, Scott
  2. Kukan, Dean
Additional Details:
Anything you can get for these two.
2.
CBJ
  1. 2022 2nd round pick (NYI)
  2. 2022 4th round pick (ARI)
ARI
  1. Nyquist, Gustav ($2,750,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Hopefully he steps up his play and we can get a late first or better prospect out of him, but right now i see us getting nothing better than this even with retention
3.
CBJ
  1. 2022 2nd round pick (ARI)
ARI
  1. Korpisalo, Joonas
Additional Details:
He's been very average and hasn't had any help from his defense. Maybe he gets hot and we steal a first with retention, but a higher second rounder is likely best case
4.
CBJ
  1. 2022 3rd round pick (ARI)
ARI
  1. Hofmann, Gregory
Additional Details:
I like him as he has adapted to the league and think he will be a solid third liner than can fill in on the second if needed, but if offered this you have to take it to create time for young guys.
5.
CBJ
  1. 2022 1st round pick (COL)
ARI
  1. Domi, Max
Additional Details:
I think we look to sign Domi. His play this season has been what we expected when we traded for him. I could see Jarmo offering a 3-4 year deal to him slightly lower than his last contract. If he doesnt want to sign then you look to get a first or second depending on retention, injuries and his play the rest of the season.

Bemstrom and Stenlund could be moved out too, they're both stuck behind better players in CBJ's player pool

Kukan has blocked a lot of shots so far this season. He just hasn't had the ice time needed in order to show his true potential. IMO, he is worth more than a seventh. Harrington always seems to be the 7th D-man. Hoffman is someone we picked up from Carolina for a 7th because Jarmo and crew saw something in his play. Why would they turn around and trade him almost immediately before he has time to completely acclimate to the NHL and AHL.

Stenlund already went through waivers, so I assumed he would have no ability to be moved. Maybe injuries in the league change that, but I agree that if we can move him we should. I think Bemstrom gets one more season. They were high on him entering camp after what appeared to be a big offseason for him. I think they see if he can earn a spot once he returns from injury and then potentially move him in the summer.

Too many wingers, especially bottom 6 wingers. His deal expires this year and there's no guarantee he would return to Columbus, hes also 29. Like I said, I like him a lot and he's still adjusting, but we have to clear out room for the Russians and draft picks.

- I don't think Harrington or Kukan are moved. We need the RD depth, so would want to keep Kukan, and Harrington has next to no value, unfortunately.

- Unless Nyquist starts turning up his play big-time, I don't see him being moved until the off-season, simply because I doubt the market is there. I do think he can be a great M6 option for a contedner, and I'd be willing to retain 50% in exchange for a 2nd.

- CBJ took a calculated gamble holding onto Korpi for this season, hoping some team would run into injury problems or similar and would be willing to overpay for Korpi. Unless that happens, I see him as likely getting a 3rd for a team that is looking for some G insurance going into the playoffs.

- Don't see Hofmann being moved. He's played as a B6 guy, and has been impressed, all told. I see him being kept around on a one-year deal next season.

- Domi has, when he's been able to be on the ice, looked great. I could definitely see him being a T6 TDL option for a team, possibly getting a 1st if CBJ retain, which I would hope they do. I would prefer CBJ not try to retain him after this season, simply because we are about to hit a logjam of T6 talent, and we'll need the roster spots.

- Either at the TDL or in the offseason, Bemstrom/ Foudy/ Stenlund are likely moved, as part of a bigger package. Stenlund wasn't claimed on waivers so, if anything, I see him being non-tendered. Bems and Foudy are no longer waivers exempt starting next season, so a decision has to be made on their role with the team. Whoever gets squeezed out likely is traded.

All told, gonna be an interesting TDL. If the team is still competing, I could see Jarmo letting it ride, particularly if the CHI pick is still looking to be a Top-10 pick in the '22 draft. Highly doubt they give up assets for any rentals or short-term boosts; anything they pick up would likely have some long-term play for the team.

I agree with everything you are saying. I think the only way we make a move to add is if a team needs to get cap compliant and Jarmo gets a deal he can't turn down. Would realistically need to be a defenseman that can contribute the next 3-5 years or a goalie if they want more time for Tarasov to develop. But I think the goal for this TDL is to clear out some of the mess to keep building and evaluating for 2023 and beyond.

Personally I think Bemstrom and Stenlund are going to go play in Europe next year.

Also, Hoffman has shooting skill but his positional play is putrid. No team is trading more than a 6th or 7th for him. He’ll probably be back in Europe next year too.

Kukan has played in 1 game and has exactly 0 blocked shots. He is a decent passer, but not really great at anything. He is worth a 6th or a 7th.

Hoffman has one goal and one secondary assist in his last 10 games. The only forwards with a worse Corsi are Kuraly and Robinson, who are playing on a different line than Hoffman and getting almost 75% defensive zone starts. He is not worth more than a 6th or a 7th round pick.
