If these guys were all such overpayment as rentals ... Why are their contracts adding up to 12.5M$ on multiyear deals? I guess they all got overpaid again and they'll all be incredibly bad contract OR they're just good and GMs know values of picks more than us?

The fact that they’re getting paid $12.5 million combined doesn’t mean anything lol. The Coleman and Goodrow contracts were definitely not liked by fans when they were signed only a few months ago. Savard’s had a better reception, but it still doesn’t change the fact that these aren’t huge contracts in the first place. While Coleman received a pretty large cap hit, the other two are being paid like the complimentary players they are. The thing is, this doesn’t matter! It’s about the trades, not their current contracts.

I’ll admit that saying Brisebois “overpaid” to get those three players is a bit strong of a word choice. He paid a little more than he should have, but he wanted to make sure he got his guys. Based on the team’s standing, his picks are already devalued, and it puts him at a bit of a disadvantage when trading draft picks compared to most other teams.

Comparing this to Chiarot, the man of the hour, I can’t see why these trades make a good case for him to be valued at a first rounder. With each trade, something other than the player themselves pushed the value above a standard 2nd rounder. Coleman and Goodrow were both on bargain contracts with an extra year on them. Savard was double retained and one of the only options on the market for a RHD, meaning the Jackets had leverage. What does Chiarot have? His contract is… fine, I guess. Probably a bit more than I’d value him at, but it’s no biggie. He’s an expiring UFA, so no extra years there that could drive up the value. The market looks pretty good this year, plenty of good LD that could potentially hit the market. I can’t see any reason why he should get a first rounder, at least in comparison to these trades.

missing intangibles, grit, pugnacity, and truculence. If you make a trade offer you should take into account the market not just your own perception of value in said market
