Kapanen - Input Wanted

Created by: Mr_Gardoki
Team: 2021-22 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 20, 2021
Published: Nov. 20, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think Kapanen is a heck of a player, but just looking down the line financially, the Pens are in a tight spot. Thankfully ERod and Heinen are playing well, Zucker (while playing incredible hockey with few goals) is hard to move due to his contract.

He shouldn't be an issue to move, but I'm not sure what destination makes the most sense, so take a look below and let me know which deal sounds the best or make your own offers.

What do the Pens need? Hawks need a top 6 RW, and I like the speed of Kap and grit...although his shot isn't the best and he sometimes overskates. Nonetheless, I'd like to see him in a Hawks sweater if it's a reasonable price.

The biggest things the Pens need is to shed cap and stock futures. Who are some of your better prospects?

EDIT: Strome is an interesting idea, too. We don't know yet if Carter will retire or simply not be retained and I still think there's something there with Strome. Maybe Strome + 2nd?

Strome + a 2nd is a bit much...maybe the late 2nd Hawks own from Tampa. Both are RFAs, one is a year younger. Problem with Strome is he's going to cost in the $3M range as a QO if the Pens need to shed cap.

Hmm, the prospects I'd like you probably won't part with and I know Mangiopane is off-limits. I'd say either just a 1st rounder or Yan Kuznetzov + 2nd, unless you'd part with Zary or Pelletier then one of them + 3rd.

I don't mind that Fabbri trade at all. If his ask isn't too high I wouldn't mind seeing Namestnikov resign in Detroit, although I'm open to him being traded.

Yeah, the cap part is an issue, but this idea only works if the Pens are going to move on from Carter, then it's cool. Strome's value is wonky right now, but I'd do the late 2nd from Tampa.

im not a pens fan but my guess would be a cheap middle 6 winger (dube maybe) and mid tier pick/prospect

Fabbri can play third line centre or be a very nice winger to elite guys like Crosby or Malkin.

Yup and Hextall really values players who can play both C/W.

I think that the Kings are going to wait another season to see where Vilardi is. Unless the deal is VERY attractive.

Ok, gotcha. I don't really have a hold on them since they have an embarrassment of riches right now in the prospect department. I figure with Brown likely to retire, Kap can take his spot.

I honestly don't know. Nobody is going to offer-sheet him, but I could see a bridge deal in the low $4M's or a long-term $5M per deal, but I don't think he'd get much more than $5M.

Fabbri has been playing on the top 2 lines and 2 of his points are on the PP. Namestnikov has 2 more points but 4 more goals and they are all even strength. He has been on the 3rd line all season. That's why I trade Fabbri and a 3rd far sooner than Namestnikov and a 2nd.

I think he would fit great in COL. He fits their speed identity and they have space for a winger

Fabbri would be more useful for the Pens IMO.

Rangers really don't have the cap for Kapanen especially next year on his new contract. Detroit might do that deal as Fabbrro is UFA.

        the penguins aren't moving KAP.
The same people with these opinions are the same people who wanted to say MP sucks and move him last year. They didn't know anything about hockey then, and they don't know anything about hockey now.

        A. their cap is fine.
        B. Kap doesn't have the help he needs. Many people on here want to knock his game. But he's not a guy who can play with Carter. Carter is 35 and can't keep up, he's slow, and if you are actually watching what is happening on the ice you know that. The only person he has to play with is Zucker, but he's not a play maker who can help Kap and open space.
Kap is here to play NS with Geno. Because he needs someone who can play that game with him and pressure up ice. Geno being out is actually a good thing at the moment. Because it's going to limit Kaps numbers and hence his contract next year. Hence both players will be coming back on a good deal. But when Geno is on the ice, it's going to take the pressure off Kap. Teams will have to focus more on Geno knowing he's a problem to match up with on the ice, allowing someone like Kap to have room, and Geno is the kind of player who can make teams play when they over commit to him creating that space.

All year this team has been playing with it's hands tied behind their back. They have been winning on the strength of their defense. I don't mean the number of goals scored, I mean their blueline.
They are becoming dangerous now because for once they have 1 like that can play to speed. When they get a 2nd line that can play full speed, it will trickle down the other 3rd and 4th lines. Who can match up better, with better center depth.

The last thing this team is doing is trading a guy who can do exactly what then need on their 2nd line. They will be biding their time until Geno is back
