This team would have been so much better without Zucker

Created by: gpmack95
Team: 2021-22 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 21, 2021
Published: Nov. 21, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Penguins are more versatile with McCann who can obviously play both center and wing.

Another underrated thing is the Penguins would have built a knockoff version of Tampa Bays pain in the butt duo of Goodrow and Coleman with Tanev and McGinn— and before people complain I said knockoff.

The Pens also have $1.6M in cap space or a little over $2M if they didn’t sign Boyle since having McCann, meaning they could have easily upgraded the bottom pairing right defenseman
Trades
SEA
  1. Aston-Reese, Zach
  2. Blomqvist, Joel [Reserve List]
  3. Hållander, Filip
  4. Zucker, Jason
  5. 2022 4th round pick (PIT)
  6. 2023 7th round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
-PIT almost walked away from Zach Aston-Reese this offseason when he was an RFA because he wanted $2M, so they trade him, goalie prospect Joel Blomqvist, and 2022 4th Round Pick to SEA to take Jason Zucker in the expansion draft

-Hallander and 2023 7th included because the McCann trade would never happen

At the time of the zucker trade it was a good one. The early returns were promising but once he was paired with malkin his production shot down

How did the Pens go in the expansion draft with their protection list, 7F/3D/1G or 4F/4D/1G ??

They must've protected Marino over Matheson?

I think he was exempt, they protected Matheson

The Pens had a pretty bad offseason/expansion draft.

I don't think it was bad. I would have liked to keep one of either McCann or Tanev and we definitely could have gotten more from Toronto for McCann. But I don't know how the cap situation would have worked out had we kept one, and I've loved McGinn and Heinen's play so far. Heinen is very versatile and was one of our best players in the early few games and the line of ZAR-Blueger-McGinn has been the Pens' most consistent over the season so far.

The cap actually works better without Zucker on the roster.

Sullivan is stubborn. Guentzel had career year with Malkin and Zucker was great with Crosby, but he refuses to change.

I do think Matheson is a top four defenseman and has played good, just needs a better partner than Ruhwedel. Ruhwedel is good for about 5-7 games than falls off.
