Falling out of a playoff spot will have no impact on what we do with Laine. He's a pending RFA. It'll be a summer deal if we trade him and considering he's only 23 I really doubt we do unless someone overpays (or he requests a trade which I also doubt).

No one is giving up a 1st for KK right now, considering no one would willingly give him his qualifying offer in the summer.

It's almost a guarantee at this point he's gong to be a UFA.

I really feel he signs a 3 year deal that is under the qualifying offer come January. Think it was wink and nod agreed to when they signed that offer sheet

You can't trade K.K this year after signing him to a offer sheet. He sucks big time you loss a 1st and 3rd round pick for 4th liner. oh and 6.1 mil in cap space.

Canes can trade KK. Only the original team that would have to match the offer sheet is restricted in trading a player. Basically preventing a team from revenge trading a player. I assume the when the CBA was written, they figured a team wouldn’t trade a guy they put an offer sheet on.

As far as JK goes, I think we’ll see what KK go the whole year with the Canes. If JK doesn’t show a ton of offensive potential, the Canes may trade him to a team in need of a center in order to keep Tro. If he gets comfortable with the system and shows more offensive prowess, then we probably keep him.

In short, maybe an off-season deal.

Injuries not considered, a RHS depth defender is probably the only move we make.

I still believe it's both teams can't move the player. beside no one will want K.K even for half that contract.
they lose him next year because of Qualifying offer.
He'll be out of the NHL next year or making league min.

Nope just the original team. QO doesn’t mean he can’t be re-signed to something else. That is a pretty harsh evaluation of a 21 year old

I watch him play for 3 years now. Never should have started his career in the NHL or been pick 3rd over all.

Still top 10, Montreal still rushed him. Either way. He still has strong enough play to be an NHLer

Not even. He is Lars Eller 2.0 and will only be good at ~25-29yrs old. He shld have gone somewhere in the 11-15 range.

Buffalo doesn't consider that since Mittelstadt is the better player... swap the picks and maybe they atleast talk

Sure, but what's that number looking like? He's off to a fairly horrible start. He can't play the wing, so he's going to be stuck at 4C (barring injuries) all year.

Wink and nod agreement prior to the season looks different then it does today, and could look way different by the end of season.

KK and his agent ultimately hold the power in negotiations.

I can’t see Buffalo wanting any part of that deal.

Mittlestadt has shown to be just as capable at the NHL level as JK. Mittlestadt has a much more favorable contract. Even if you extended Jk to a 3-4 mil contract that’s more than what Mittlestadt is going to make the next 2 seasons. Throw in an additional 1st and retention on Mittlestadt for some reason and it’s a definitive no. I could see Buffalo perhaps being willing for a 1 for 1 swap if they though JK might have more promise than what he’s shown thus far but not with the additional stuff

I thought it was clever and showed some much needed personality when carolina offer sheeted jk. Im sorry it hasnt gone well, but we arent helping them out, its a bad deal that gets worse with the qo, and we are paying a premium and wasting a retention spot to do it. This is bad for buffalo, and it has the potential to get even worse in the near future.

Under the CBA, he cannot be traded by the Hurricanes. He can be signed to an extension, but they cannot trade him. He will be there for the rest of the season.

Hindsight's 20/20, but if they could do it all over again, they may not have signed him to that offer sheet. Over $6 million (and a first and third) for a player who just played a shade over 9 minutes last night: they could have allocated that money towards a better asset via trade. While it may have been a conversation starter and made for good laughs, I am not sure they will look back on that move too fondly. Good team, though. I also think that late first may end up being more productive than Kotkaniemi.

If you are going to quote the CBA, you should probably read it first. Your first paragraph just reeks of ignorance.

No they don’t. The Canes can easily not qualify him, call his bluff, and let him not get the money he says he can.

I’m not gonna sit here and say this deal is great but KK has all but officially signed a 4 year deal worth about 4 mil. He’s not going to be a UFA and that is well known
