TDL if sharks decide to retool

Created by: glarson17
Team: 2021-22 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 22, 2021
Published: Nov. 22, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is if the team is not contending, which I expect them to not be, and Doug Wilson tries to acquire assets.

It will be too costly to move Kane at this moment, so just keep him this season. Maybe in the off-season he can be moved for a more reasonable price or bought out etc.

I would like them to move on from Simek but they’ve tried to move him for a year now and it hasn’t happened.

thats too much to give up for a rental in Hertl. Avs would decline at that price. If they were willing to move a 1st Barron and Oskar they can get someone with term still thats an impact player

Pending UFA TDL moves dont net multiple top prospects from a team in a single trade

What would you be willing to give up for Hertl retained?

There’s no way the Rangers can afford Labanc’s contract long term. Especially if they believed they couldn’t afford a long term Pavel Buchnevich contract.

I feel like the Rangers would be better off getting Hertl and strengthening down the middle...

Labanc gets a hard rap in San Jose that I don’t feel is necessarily deserved. He’s a great offensive player, even better when he’s put with other offensive guys. The sharks don’t like his production but at the same time throw him on a line with Bonino and Cogliano and expect him to be great.

Maybe barron and a 1st, but really nothing more than that.
Rather try to do a Jost lesser prospect (kaut level) and a 1st type of move instead . Cant see Sakic trading his top prospects in barron Oskar or Helleson for rentals

I get they don’t want to give up much with him being a rental but the sharks can’t afford to move Hertl, their best player, for other teams lesser prospects especially when he is worth it. Any pick is going to be a late round pick as well

i guess it really depends on how much strome gets or if they let him walk. whatever they do though the 1RW needs to be addressed ASAP goodrow cannot play there.

I would see the sharks asking for a 1st and Schneider at least in a trade for Hertl.

then Avs probably are not your target trade partner. they need their higher end guys on ELCs to come in and fill spots as they become more expensive while keeping their cup windows open. Moving guys who can fill important spots for pure rentals doesn't really make sense

Honestly I see the sharks moving Hertl for less to a team that cannot resign him as a rental then resigning him this offseason.
we can then use the pieces we got for his rental to improve our depth and rebuild!

I HATE how we are Utilizing him and feel the sharks are punishing him, he needs to be in our top 6 with productive guys so we can utilize his skill better.

In an ideal world yes he comes right back and all is great in the world, but I really wouldnt count on that. Its very very rare for a marquee player to get to UFA and decide to sign with his original team, I dont even think there is a recent example of a marquee guy being traded then signing back in the offseason.

Once he has a taste of UFA, its hard to put that genie back in the bottle. Especially if hes traded, Sharks will have all communication cut off from him March to July 1st.

He has mentioned that he would sign for less with a contender if it’s a good fit. He’s also said he loves San Jose and has started a family there; he made it seems as though he doesn’t necessarily want to leave. It will be interesting to see how it shakes out.

players say a lot of things, mackinnon said he would sign for less with the avs on his next deal as well, until that actually happens it could just be a good sound byte by them.
ROR said he wanted to make it work with the Avs and stay there long term when the press asked him, clearly that wasnt his plans at all.

I would give him the benefit of the doubt but also wouldnt be shocked if he had the chance to take a contract somewhere else and make bank. will never fault a player for getting paid when they can

I cannot see JBB giving up a 1st for Nieto. I know he did for Goodrow, but based on the way the team is built this year I don’t feel like we have a need for Nieto at that price. Back in 2020 it was obvious we wanted premium bottom 6 pieces.

Goodrow was 25, a center, scored actual points, at the time was one of the best PKers in the league. Nieto is not any of those things. Goodrow played a gritty game suited for playoffs, still had upside (Nieto already hit his ceiling and is declining) and Nieto is injury prone. When Goodrow was traded he had 24 points. Nieto hasn't hit at least 24 in four years.

He doesn’t provide as much offense but he is a pk specialist, that’s what he is known for. He’s also on a cheap deal that has another year.

Fine but if we're being realistic Nieto will return a 3rd at best, maybe a 4th.

so you make a side deal with the team to return a draft pick for his negotiating rights after their season ends!
and I've seen players return after being traded as rentals (Marleau last season, though he wasn't a Marque player by then)
Wilson would have to have a contract in place prior to trading him and hope Hertl understands this is 1, to give him a chance at a cup. and 2, this helps add pieces to rebuild the club he is coming back to and 3, the other team is aware of our plans and is ok with this knowing they are getting Hertl at a reduced rate for this very reason.
it's a risk but the worst case scenario we get a 1st for Hertl who left us, best case we get the pick and Hertl and speed up our rebuild that much more!

Goodrow was a Coaching dream player, middle 6 guy who could play on any line but was ideally suited for a 3rd line depth role, young on a 2 year deal paying him less than a mil a season. could score check hit and play on the PK and did everything a coach could ask of him short of being a 20+ goal guy!!!
Nieto is a good solid depth guy but lacks that pedigree that Goodrow had (hence the deal NY gave him!) ideal would be Nieto for a 3rd, but thats the MAX we could get for him.
