Alternate Take on the Retool

Created by: ragger_lord
Team: 2023-24 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 23, 2021
Published: Nov. 23, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I'm bored at work... Just an alternate idea where Horvat is traded instead of Miller (they expire at the same time). Boeser goes too but the Canucks keep the core of Petey, Hughes, Demko, and Miller.

Burak could be anyone and could cost up to 7mil.

I think this is actually a fair and realistic deal. Think VAN can maybe squeeze out either a mid round pick or B level prospect as well. A guy like Reilly Walsh possibly; if NJ doesn't want to part with prospects tho, could see them throwing in a third or fourth because we have multiple this year

Sorry, you not getting JDB, and Sens 1st is gonna be a top 5 or top 10 in a deep draft, so way over value for Horvat. Also, sens need right-hand top 6 forwards. You would be better off switching your trades.

I'd do Boesner to the Sens for White with retained money & Branstrom who plays both sides. maybe I would add a 3rd as well, but with the retained money the two players should be enough

Devils need Sevo more than Boeser IMO (although they could really use Boeser). But the value seems reasonable, assuming that pick isn't too low.

I'll be really surprised if the Devils trade Severson anytime before next season's TDL, and that's if he isn't interested in an extension. RD are the most desirable players in the league right now.

The first would be top 5 protected and White is basically a cap dump. I've seen a few Sens fans that works do a similar trade. Maybe Van sends back a sweetener

Not at all interested in Boeser for brannstrom.

Still that would be an unprotected 2023 1st . Too much. I would do a 2023 top 5 protected 1st . Also you said White is a cap dump , he sure as hell isn’t with 1.5 mill in retention . I would say he would hold a ton of value at that price

Don't be fooled Branstomm is a great offensive threat that can also run your PP2, he should have been on Ottawa's second pairing all season, the problem is the coach doesn't;t like him, so doesn't play him enough.

White is never much not a cap dump with the retained money, very solid 3rd line Center

I would move the first to a top 5 protected 2023.

I would also be willing to drop White from the deal all together and add a late pick or lower tier prospect instead. Not all that interested in him.

This is ridiculous.

The issue with White is that he makes $1.5MM too much, and you want him, and for Ottawa to keep paying that $1.5MM extra. That pick might be top 5, in a strong draft, and it might be top 2 or 3. This is ridiculous.

It's not a cap dump if there's retained money, jeez, seriously?

I don't want White, I just added him to balance cap hits. Keep him if you want.

First would be protected

You're bumbling your way through this idea, without understanding what your players value is, or what a camp dump is, since you are now saying you didn't want White.

The biggest tell is, you were specific in when the trade happens, and when the extension occurred, I'm assuming since you wrote 2022 and not 22/23, but not specifying the first being protected, which means it wasn't, in your original thought process. Now if you meant at anytime in 2022, then that's worse because you can't say a player extends after they are traded. Also, giving Horvat an 8 year deal when he's 28 reduces his value.

It was a well thought out trade, that wasn't thought through enough, regardless of the concessions you are making now.

Don't have to insult me.

After the Karlsson and Duchene debacles I assume all first rounders are protected which is why I didn't write it.

Horvat can't sign an extension until July 2022 but there's no reason one can't be negotiated with permission.

I said 2022 in general because it could be a deadline, or a draft day deal. If it's a draft day deal there would be no need for protection. It could also happen July 1 with an agreed upon extension for a 2023 pick... But that's a lot to write in the little trade box which a lot of people only skim over.

Regarding White, yes I mis-valued him. I thought taking his cap, even with a bit retained would be helpful, I was wrong.

If you would rather keep him, remove him from the trade entirely. Canucks could add a late pick or middling prospect as a sweetener.

I don't know how to respond to the insulting part, without insulting you, if you think bumbling is insulting, or that it wasn't thought through enough.

Not all first round picks are protected, but if they are, the conditions needs to be specific. Top 10 is common, top 5 is somewhat common, top 3 and top 2 have occurred as well.

I don't know about another team negotiating an extension with a player that still has a full season left on his contract, but that sounds very unlikely, although I can't say it isn't allowed because I'm not a CBA expert.

"But that's a lot to write in the little trade box which a lot of people only skim over. " grow up please, this isn't a teen conversation.

Bumbling is the insult... And you did it again with the grow up please. If I wrote the entire description regarding when he was traded (deadline, draft, etc) I guarantee almost no one would read it. I've had it happen multiple times, people don't read the description or trade box. It's much easier to just reply in comments because people inevitably ask anyways.

Regarding the contract stuff, I'm basing the negotiation period around Jones. Jones was traded on the 23rd and FA opened on the 28th but it was understood they already had an extension in place. Horvat would be in the same contract situation.

Admittedly I don't know if they could do it at the deadline, but at the draft it would be feasible.

That would be my thought as well. And with Severson with only 1.5 years remaining, not sure he first Vancouver's timeline either.

Bumbling just means ineffective, as in, your path to what you want wasn't effective. As for the grow up, that was in response to a teenagers style excuse. We're adults, take ownership of your actions.

The Seth Jones contract, although I see your intent is using it as an example, has conflicting reports on it. I can't say it's a bad example, but it's definitely not standard. I can't find any info on which team negotiated the contract. Capfriendly has it listed as finalized on July 23rd, and other reports are July 28th and July 29th. It's much more common for a sign and trade, than whatever truly happened there. The end result was what they all wanted, so that's a definite positive.

Here's the original trade proposed;

VAN
Bernard-Docker, Jacob [RFA Rights]
White, Colin ($1,500,000 retained)
2022 1st round pick (OTT)
OTT
Horvat, Bo
Additional Details:
Traded in 2022, signs extension July 1 2022

And here's my revised version of what I think you wanted to propose, correct me if I'm wrong.

VAN
Bernard-Docker, Jacob [RFA Rights]
White, Colin ($1,500,000 retained)
2022 1st round pick (OTT) (top 10 protected)
OTT
Horvat, Bo
Additional Details:
Traded with extension in place, signs extension July 1 2022

Then of course, the other discussed alterations from this thread would be made.

I hope you understand now why I was taken aback at the comment, "But that's a lot to write in the little trade box which a lot of people only skim over. "

As for Bo Horvat, I like him, but I wouldn't give him an 8 year deal myself, maybe 5 or 6 years, ages 28 thru 32 or 33. Having written that, I would probably go 6 years, and plan a TDL trade at age 32 with 1 season remaining. I don't know what I would offer for Horvat, mostly because I'm not sure what direction the Canucks want to go, rebuild with picks, retool, all in and compete now, or anywhere in between, but I doubt Ottawa's 1st in on the table for any player other than a 75+ point 1C.
