I'd ask for Chytil over Strome personally. Overall it feels a bit light, I'd prefer Miller

Edit: this is the first I'm hearing about the Rangers being interested, but it's not surprising considering they're reportedly in the market for a top 6 forward. Russo said in his podcast today that Carolina has interest as well

Where's this rumor from?

I think the Rangers are far better equipped to make this deal from Minnesota's POV. They have several young roster forwards who can contribute now while also being a part of the team after the buyouts. And you can add a pick or prospect to them for an additional asset.

Chytil, Kakko, Miller, Lundkvist, Barron, Jones, Schneider. Any one of them could work.

Probably something like Strome + Kratzov for Fiala was the offer.

Rangers can't afford him past this year. Replace strome with someone else. Is this coming from Russo?

How about Kaako?? He plays on 3rd line there anyway. Sometimes 4th

I don't know why Guerin would trade Fiala to have the piece coming back for the future be another guy that has had "character issues"

strome has literally outscored fiala for 3 straight years and is a centre with good chemistry with panarin, why do the rangers even consider this

My guess is because Fiala is the better player, but I don't know, I'm just spitballing. And the Rangers have been talking about moving on from Strome for two years.

Define "outscored"

In 132 games over the past 3 years, Fiala has 46 goals and 106 points, and scored 2.95 points per 60 minutes.
In 140 games over the past 3 years, Strome has 34 goals and 119 points, and scored 2.70 points per 60 minutes.

Strome may have slightly more points, but he's been on the ice a longer in the games he has played in (18:55 ATOI for Strome vs 16:20 ATOI for Fiala in that span). Not to mention Strome also had literally one of the best wingers in the NHL attached to his hip, while Fiala has had bottom 6 players because he's been in Dean's dog house for some reason.

I'm guessing that was NYR's offer is all, both the players are expendable for the rags.

As soon as Laf, Kaako, or Miller name comes up the conversation abruptly ends from NYR's side.

I'm sure. I could see a long shot at Kakko being available, but I doubt it. Barron and Chytil are intriguing, but even with a 1st on top, I'm not sure either of them are really satisfying as a return. I would strongly prefer not getting a defenseman as the return, but who knows what Guerin will look for.

He's probably in the doghouse because he's the streakiest player in the league and does nothing defensively. That probably also explains his low TOI, if he was more consistent he'd play more. If two guys have even remotely close offensive totals, the edge goes to the centre, especially if that centre has chemistry with your best player. The Rangers don't have the depth up the middle to trade away a top six centre for a winger, especially when the winger isn't even clearly the better player.

Kakko is literally on the second line with Strome and Panarin and has been almost the entire year. Sixth in average ice time among all forwards (almost 16 minutes a night). Doesn’t fit the fourth line narrative.

Fiala has been killing penalties this year and works his arse off every shift!

I'd prefer Miller too, but if the VAN fans are right, we'd have to give Addison for him and I'm not ready to do that.

I like this Fiala trade in general and if it happened I wouldn't be mad at it.

I mean.. rangers still don't consider because they are incredibly weak at center. Also, where are you getting your stats from?

From 18-19 season to current (past three seasons plus this year so far) Strome has 154 points in 221 games and Fiala has 145 points in 215. Its a .696 point per game for Strome and a .674 for Fiala. And Fiala's in the doghouse? He is averaging over 18 minutes per game this season.

Rangers would be insane to do this trade. As I mentioned, they are weak at center but are also giving up a 1st round pick on top of it for a player that has a similar impact but plays a less important position. Stupid move. Yeah i get that Fiala is an RFA but just like Strome, rangers won't have the money to resign him next season.

Hockey Reference. Used stats from 19-20 season to this season. I'm not a fan of points per game since the minutes can differ greatly between players.

I'm not trying to make the argument that this makes sense for the Rangers because it doesn't. But Fiala is the better player.

It's not the minutes he's playing, it's who he is playing with. Fiala has actually been playing better than Kaprizov (in my opinion), but Kaprizov gets the favoritism when it comes to linemates. Fiala has been playing mostly with Gaudreau, Rask, Eriksosn Ek, and Foligno and those guys aren't exactly the most skilled offensively. Fiala has also been taken off the power play and when he's your second best offensive player it's pretty obvious he's in the doghouse. There has also been some public tension lately between Fiala and Evason.
