Trading for Kane

Created by: Byrr
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 24, 2021
Published: Nov. 24, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Friedge has reported that San Jose is willing to retain in order to move Kane. Fan sites think they'll have to pay to move him out but I'm willing to take him for no cost. 3rd + Semyonov to move Ritchie's deal. Barabanov has worked out really well for SJ, hopefully Semy can as well since he won't get the time on ice in Toronto. Holl LTIRed to say he's moved somewhere else for something else.

Off the ice Kane might be a problem but on the ice he is everything the Leafs need, a top 6 left winger who brings a heavy amount of 'grit' and a scoring touch. I'm gambling on Dubas' good relationship with players working out well for Kane and getting his life on track.

Entire thing is dependent on Kane being vaccinated. He used a fake card months ago but there is no reporting on whether he has since been vaccinated or whether he's willing to be.

Again, Friedge has said they are willing to retain in order to move a player who teams don't want.

Sure, but not 50%. There's just no way. That's $14M retained over 4 years.

As opposed to the buyout. They aren't in a position to be picky.

I would not want any part of a Kane deal. The off ice issues are few too many and this is something that the Leafs don't need/want in the Toronto market.

That's what people said about DeAngelo too and now he's the most efficient non-ELC contract in the league. People get chased away too easily by the off ice stuff.

The buyout is basically half that retained salary in most years. They have a year at 1.8 mil next year at 3.8 mil next year at 2.8 next year at 4.8 mil followed by 2 more years at 1.8. They pay 18 mil total but have 4 years at less cap hit then if they retained 3.5 Mil x 4 years.

And twice the term. They have the same cap hit averaged out over the next 3 seasons then have 3 extra years of cap hit following it. That's not a win in any fashion. They pay more out of pocket and have more in cap hit every season but 1.

Yeah well I would point to Carolina not being in the same neighborhood of hockey market that Toronto is. That is not a slight on Carolina, just that teams just can't do the same as some of the non traditional hockey markets can.

Still a lot of ifs in the Kane situation so I'm not sure how good or bad this is. I would prefer a trade with retention rather than a typical buyout that's for sure.

Really want no part of ritchie though lol

He has a lot of off ice questions. Not sure if that is the right price.

His buyout would be $16 million over 6 years vs $14 million over 4yrs if they retained. They're better off buying him out vs taking a pile of crap where the best piece is a 3rd rounder that has less than a 15% chance of playing 100 games in the NHL.

TOR is finally looking like they are meshing well together, and playing very strongly... why the heck would you risk that for this guy? This is a very fragile team and locker room as we've seen... I don't really get it. Retention or not, this is a really dumb move for TOR

it would be 3.5 for 3 years vs the buy out that we pay for for 6 years with each of the first 3 years averaging out to 3.6 mil plus 3 more at 1.6. it would be more cost effective and logical to trade him 50% retained

So lets say Kane wanted to go to Toronto.

Starting with 22-23 season Kane has 3 yrs left
3 x 3.5 = 10.5M in retention
The Buyout 3.6, 2.7, 4.7, 1.6, 1.6, 1.6 = 16M over 6 yrs

In the short term is 10.5 Retain vs 11M buyout in yrs 1-3. This is why SJS is willing to retain for 50% and it shave the 3 extra years of cap hit. its about the same in years 1-3.

Now I dont think they will find a taker that kane will waive for. Kane gets 21M if he gets traded only 16M if he takes the buy out. Kane has to decide if he can make 5M somewhere over the next 3 seasons.

To get rid of dead money there is a very very strong chance they may go up to 50% as they got 0 leverage in any trade involving him

In truth if it was not for all the negative media attention and antics away from the rink Kane at 50% retention would be a solid add for us

If management sees its worth the risk could see a trade where SJ retain 50% of his deal and Toronto sends a low pick and Ritchie back. As even with his salary + the 50% retention thats still way cheaper then keeping Kane.
