That is a really fair offer but I doubt MB will retain 2 million for 3 years without getting another piece...unless they finally do decide to rebuild

What would likely end up being a late 1st and 2nd is on the weaker side for a return for toffoli even without retention. He is a guy who can play 1st line mins competently signed for less than 5 million and is young enough to not age too poorly through the remainder of the deal.

With Retention they would need at minimum the 1st, 2nd, and atleast 2 of Valimaki Pelletier and zary.

Then your not remotely in the ballpark for getting him. Toffoli is a ESTABLISHED fringe top line player who with that retention is at a cap hit that is would be 230th among forwards this season. Factoring in ELCs that is what most teams are paying their 9th-10th forward. That would be one of the biggest gaps between player value and cap hit in the league for a non elc player.

Zary and Pelletier are good but not elite prospects. In all likelihood neither will ever be as good as Toffoli is. (for reference at the same age Toffoli made his NHL debut and scored at a .5 ppg pace in the regular season and playoffs)

Pelletier is dominating the AHL, and is a favourite to win rookie of the year. Toffoli was brought up early because LA was exiting their rebuild at the time. I would say he has very good odds at being as good or better than Toffoli.

ELC's are the main factor neither are available for a someone like Toffoli. Calgary has very limited cap space next season and major contracts to sign for players all more important than Toffoli. bringing up someone like Pelletier on his ELC is very important for the Flames moving forward

No way Habs will retain salary on Toffoli. Replace the 2nd round pick with a 3rd rounder and no retained salary.
