"Within a playoff spot" isn't good enough for a team that wants to contend though. If you're going to acquire a player, he has to be an UPGRADE on the player he's replacing or it's a backwards move. That's why I don't understand you pining for below average backups/ AHL level goalies.

Who’s better that doesn’t involve a commitment? With assumption both smith and kosk aren’t options? Goalie market has been flooded over the past few years there’s always options come deadline. I’m not interested in going for divisional titles or anything just want the strongest team possible in front of skinner give him the best chance at success. Back up only needs to be average for the team to good. If it’s seen as a weakness next deadline korp Allen whoever as long as they are on a cheap contract will be very easy to move and find an upgrade.

Why are you assuming Smith and Koskinen aren't options?

And why do you think guys like Korpisalo, Allen and Georgiev are available? Because they suck and their teams know it. And they haven't moved because nobody wants them, so I 100% disagree that they would be easy to move if they aren't playing well.

Assuming smith retires due to lingering injuries. If kosk is going to accept cutting his pay in half or near half I see him choosing to go to a different market where he’s not constantly being criticized by both fans and media.
So upgrading over them requires either a big investment in free agency or a bunch of assets threw a trade both those options I don’t think is needed given skinner has looked strong to very strong in each game he’s played. Better the group in front of him not only betters his chance of success but also gives an Allen or korp a chance to succeed as well. If by next deadline that looks like something that needs to be addressed moving out a 2-3 million dollar goalie with very little term wouldn’t be difficult.

I disagree. Nobody will want a crap goalie for $2 or 3M. Crap goalies are a dime-a-dozen, they aren't easily moved. If we're talking league minimum, you can just push that guy off to the minors, but that takes a spot away from one of the prospects so that's not a good idea either.
