Ottawa Wright and UFA signings

Created by: Mike7856
Team: 2022-23 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 28, 2021
Published: Nov. 28, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
OTT needs QUALITY vets
Giroux is the big get. From the area and would instantly fill a huge hole on the team.will have to overpay probably to get him here with more term.
Manson adds some defensive presence and is a big body DJ will love and much better than Zaitsev
Holtby is again a quality vet and can backup Gus providing some stability in net

Lineups:
Fwd line 1 - Giroux can play really anywhere here. Nice balance of skill and grit on the line
Fwd line 2 - this line could be great. Skill of Stutzle and Wright should be huge and finishing of batherson will make this a lethal line
Fwd line 3- DJ’s “identity” line. Hard to play against and skilled. Very good 3rd line.
Fwd line 4- add some youth with greig as he can really fit anywhere in the lineup. Ennis I think is underrated along the boards and wins lots of puck battles. White on 4th line is good even with the contract. All in all a hardworking, solid line with some skill
Fwd lines look balanced and should have scoring throughout

Defence line 1 - Chabot is elite and paired with thomson this year has looked great
Defence line 2- Sanderson coming up is huge. Instantly helps the breakout out of D zone and can actually defend. Zub
Defence line 3- brannstrom gets pp2 time and some sheltered mins which is the best situation for him. Give him a quality D partner like Manson who can handle most of the d zone duties and he should be given his best chance to succeed.
All in all, much better than this season. Only worry is they are really betting on Sanderson stepping in and being a top 4 D which is a pretty big ask.

Goalies- again Gus is the man. Bring in a quality vet like holtby to back him up in case he struggles to bring some quality relief

This team could probably fight for a spot in the playoffs. At least they should be competitive at the deadline which would be a pleasant change

Too much term for Giroux and Manson. Sens are hoping that their young guns will warrant big contracts on their new RFA contracts soon.

Term for Giroux and Manson is a big no.... Norris getting 7M per seems extremely unlikely.

Blake Wheeler got 8.25 x 5 when he signed his extension, I assume Philly will offer Giroux something comparable. Giroux is a year older than Wheeler was when his new deal kicked in, and had come off a pretty good season, so maybe Philly gets Giroux slightly cheaper. Either way I don't see how 7.5 x 4 is an overpay. I think if Giroux hits the open market you'll have to give him a higher AAV than that to get him to come

Yeah a bit more with Giroux than Manson IMO. Manson would have 1 year left with Sanderson up so shouldn’t be a very hard contract to move even with some retention( plus OTT is hopefully competitive so can throw in a 3rd or 2nd for no retention) Giroux could be tough in a couple years but need to give him a reason to come. Maybe a 3 year with a slightly higher AAV like 3x8 could work

That’s fair. I just went based on what I’ve seen flyers fans posting and they’re usually shorter term and AAV like 2x5 or 3x6 so just paying a bit more

1. Giroux will play out the rest of his career with the Flyers.

2. Overpayment on Manson and Ennis.

3. Holtby is not signing in Ottawa.

4. We are not spending assets to dump anyone.

If you don’t pay quality UFAs term and money they aren’t gonna sign for one year just because it’s convenient for the team. If you don’t pay that then keep signing short term bottom dwellers and keep having the same problems you have this season. Also not all your prospects are going to pan out so putting high expectations on them will hurt their development.

1. I mean it is a hypothetical if Giroux wants to test free agency. Mainly if flyers aren’t offering what he wants. Again highly unlikely he does leave but it was more about the kind of player Ottawa should be looking for which is a quality top 6 vet who can help stabilize the group, like Giroux.

2. Again, Manson is an overpay in term but shouldn’t have trouble moving the contract in a couple years when JBD can take over. Mainly anyone to get Zaitsev out of the regular line up. For ennis, I mean 1.5m for 2 seasons is hardly going to be a problem for any team and I don’t mind rewarding players who perform well like he has

3. Was more about a quality vet to back up Gus. Holtby was just more of an example (playoff experience and can take over if Gus struggles for a bit)

4. You can keep Murray if you want but it’s either a buyout or you will have to trade an asset to get rid of that contract. I’m not opposed to moving an asset like formenton if we’re resigning Paul. Greig fits right away so trading a player on your 4th line ( at most would be a 3rd liner) isn’t a bad deal to get rid of that contact. Also Murrays buyout is kind of crap and could hurt trying to resign players like stutzle/sanderson
